I listened to games on the radio a lot when I was a kid. I like Rooney and Horton all right but they are no Jack Buck Mike Shannon.

Agree. I do mlb audio when I’m driving. They’re okay, but I grew listening to some combination of Harry & Jack & Mike and that’s a pretty high bar.

I had old man Shannon growing up who was fun but could miss a lot and make the game really slow.

Rooney and Horton are caricatures of broadcasters. It's a tad cheesy for me, but is good for listening to a game you can't see.

When I couldn't watch games a couple years ago, I liked listening to the other team's broadcast. It's fun hearing other teams give their perspectives on our players.

All three were just shadows of their prime voices as they aged (fortunately Harry was somewhere else by then…), but I’m lucky to have had them in their prime and could never critique them too harshly because of all the memories.

I usually listen to the Mets TV broadcast when we play them. Gary, Ron & Keith are top shelf.

I only have one request of an AI future - please allow me to listen to prime Jack Buck and Mike Shannon calling current games.

Buck and Shannon were great on call-in shows on KMOX, as well. They did a fine job assessing the team, talent coming up in the minors, young players adjusting the league--they were clear, knowledgeable, experienced, and wonderful raconteurs.

For a while in the early 70's, you could hear Caray broadcast Cubs games on WGN: he was still quite good then.

And let's face it, KMOX had Buck, Shannon, Dan Kelly and the Blues, Costas for a period of time, and Bob Starr calling Missouri Tigers games. It was a golden age of sports broadcasting in St. Louis, coupled with excellent sports coverage in the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, St. Louis Globe-Democrat, and the Sporting News (which was published locally, although a national periodical).
