Defensively, Nebraska has a very good secondary, but needs to bring 5-6 guys to get consistent pressure on the QB(not like last year where a 1-10 alignment with Suh would've pressured any QB). Mizzou's O-line has been incredible this year, and Gabbert has shown these past weeks that he's very capable of punishing defenses. If Nebraska has to choose between letting Gabbert have all day to throw and only having 5-6 in coverage, they're going to give up 35 points just like Oklahoma did. Offensively, Mizzou has had good success against run-first QBs out of the spread, and their shift in how they play DBs will definitely help them against Martinez's noodle-arm. The big concern is that Martinez is going to get to the second level his share during the game, the safeties and corners need to be sure tacklers(they have been so far) because they aren't a super fast secondary and it only takes one play for Martinez to go 60+ yards and change the game. I'd say that if Mizzou is -1 or even in turnovers, then they probably will have a shot to win/defend the lead at the end of the game. If they're winning the turnover battle, they're probably protecting a 10-14 point lead at the end of the game like they were on Saturday.
I'm very worried. This game is way more important than OU, because this is likely to decide the North. On the road against a very good football team. Martinez showed he can throw the ball a little against OSU. They would have blown them out if Justin Blackmon wasn't such a beast. Mizzou doesn't have a Justin Blackmon. The O-line had by far their best game of the year to give Gabbert time, but our receivers still struggled to get open at times. I don't expect the line to be that good every game. You can't really call Nebraska a spread team since they run the ball so well. I think this is a tougher test for the defense than OU (who moved the ball pretty well save for the TOs.). I wouldn't count on Nebraska fumbling the ball very often vs. picking off a couple of Landry Jones' 50 pass attempts. They have the kind of offense that can hog time of possession, wearing out the D and keeping the O off the field. I like that we have some very athletic defensive ends. If they stay disciplined they have the speed to help out a lot with containing Martinez.

Missouri at +7 is a fair line, but I wouldn't call it a great line like everyone else. I would avoid it. Unless you are convinced that Mizzou is clearly better, that line seems like a coinflip to me. 7 point lines suck no matter which side you bet because of the high chance of a push.

I think you're being a little pessimistic as to how well the offense moved the ball. They put up 486 yards and 6 yards per play. And Nebraska isn't as good at stopping the run as OU.

On the turnovers, it's actually quite the opposite. Nebraska fumbles the ball 3 times per game and have lost 9 this year, add in any chance of interceptions from Martinez and it's actually a pretty strong possibility that Nebraska turns the ball over more than once.

It's really as simple as this: If Mizzou is as advertised and their offensive line is as good as we think, then the offense should have no problem running or passing the ball against that Nebraska defense. If our defense is as good as we think it is, then Martinez won't be putting up 51 points on this team.

If Mizzou plays Nebraska like they played Oklahoma then they should dominate the game. Nebraksa isn't near as good as Oklahoma.

Nebraska is every bit as good as OU. Better, even. They're just very good in very different ways. They were putting up cartoon numbers against K-State and Washington, both solid BCS conference schools. Their defense is probably a little less athletic than Oklahoma's but it's also more sound (ie. less mistake-prone). Martinez is more turnover prone but also harder to defend than the Landry Jones Orgy of Bubble Screens*. Even with Martinez's issues, they hung 51 on Oklahoma State, on the road. OSU is a top 15 team in the S&P. If OU and Nebraska were playing, I'd take Nebraska. This isn't your big brother's OU team. I'm sure they will be in 2011, though.

I know it's simplifying things but I think so much of this game comes down to Gabbert. TT referenced his ability the last two weeks to punish teams who overplay one way or the other (defending the screens or defending the deep stuff) and there's no doubt that's what happened. But it hasn't always happened this season. If Gabbert can take what the Huskers give him, Mizzou will get the job done.

the team that has more points and given up fewer has a great chance of winning the game

Whoa. Dude. Never thought of this. Wow. I'm going to have to totally rethink how I view football.

But yeah, my point was that I think Missouri is the better team. If they can beat Oklahoma they can beat Nebraska. You brought up some valid points though JL. I always like talking to people who know more about college football than me.

A killer rundown of the OU game from RMN:

Holy crap, I didn't realize they'd be returning four of the five OL starters next year.

And that's the only senior on the offensive side of the ball.
