Re: Coronavirus
I wish I could find a link to this really fascinating interview I heard I think Tuesday or Wednesday night on the BBC World Service radio on why Delta is so infectious. They were interviewing a British researcher whose study hasn't been published yet, but he was describing that Delta has an incredibly efficient and fast way of moving from cell to cell before antibodies can neutralize it. They believe that this is what enables Delta to produce breakthrough infections in BOTH vaccinated and previously infected people. BOTH.
So Delta can infect before neutralizing antibodies even see it. It also has some antibody resistance as well, but is fought off in people with either vaccine induced or natural immunity when the antibodies do finally catch it.
So it is still important to get vaccinated to reduce the severity of infection. Going forward, he said more research needs to be done into vaccines that don't just produce antibodies, but that also hamper virus transmissibility. Why haven't we done this already? Because to produce a vaccine that will block a virus from transmitting in the first place you have to figure out what mechanism it uses to transmit, and that requires experiments where you modify the virus, aka the dreaded "gain of function" research that is a political and to a lesser extent scientific hot potato.

What is meant by 'mechanism it uses to transmit'?G. [strikethrough]Regardless, we should ask the people at the WIV since they were the ones doing the gof research that led to this whole mess [/striketrhough]
I really wish we had a strikethrough feature on this board

Re: Coronavirus
I think it means what specific mutation makes Delta, or any other virus, more transmissible than the original version of the virus for which a vaccine was made. To understand that and empirically test it so that you could make a vaccine for it, you'd have to genetically modify the virus, making it potentially more transmissible aka gain of function, in order to test which mutations actually do make it more transmissible. That's the only way to get a step ahead of novel animal viruses. There are a finite number of possible mutations so you can isolate the ones which will have a given effect you want to block through gain of function experiments.AWvsCBsteeeerike3 wrote: ↑September 10 21, 12:51 pmWhat is meant by 'mechanism it uses to transmit'?G. Sorry, I missed this…..or it could have something to do w/ Merck developing a new patented drug that does essentially the same thing that they’ll be able to charge who knows how much for.G. Keenan wrote: ↑September 10 21, 9:44 amFunny, Merck, one of the biggest manufacturers of ivermectin, have said it should not be used to treat Covid. Presumably they would be happy to take the windfall whether it works or not, being a greedy pharma company and all.cardinalkarp wrote: Oh that’s right we’ve just allowed big pharma to literally print $$$. Because say what you will, they are essentially making us on the hook for boosters FOR - [expletive] - EVER. Bank on it.

And obviously since ivermectin is out of patent, ANYONE can make it….so no windfalls to be made by Merck.

Re: Coronavirus
I love how Topol let's his twitter peeps bypass any paywall by just posting the entire article onto his twitter feed. Lol.
Anyway, I feel like maybe we haven't talked about this in detail enough and perhaps it's best to recap, from my limited understanding, what's happening.
Doctors are great at a lot of things, sometimes explaining things isn't one of them. So, let's use verbiage that's easier to understand.
Covid is a penis with sperm. The ace2 receptor is a vagina connected to a tube that goes to an egg that can be fertilized. Penis goes into vagina, releases sperm, and bam, more covid. This is bad.
The body can produce condoms (antibodies) to fit over the penis, essentially keeping it from making baby covid. This is good.
It takes a naive body weeks to study the new penis and make a good condom. This allows many covid reproductions. This is bad.
A vaccine is a penis without sperm, or a fake penis, aka a dildo. This allows the naive body to make a condom in weeks without covid reproducing in the body. This is good.
To recap:
Covid = fully loaded penis
Ace2 = vagina
Antibody = condom
Vaccine = dildo
covid + ace2 = reproduction
So the dildo allows the immune system to make condoms that fit the penis without reproduction occuring.
Then there are t cells. T cells, following the analogy, are condom manufacturers and abortion clinics.
It has been posited, in a more scientific manner, that the delta variant is a young dumb constantly full of [expletive] two pump chump. And without condoms at the ready will reproduce with more vaginas than earlier variants. Those sick [expletive].
But, it does not seem to affect condom manufacturing or abortion clinics, it just overloads them. This is a key difference because in naive severely ill patients early on, those clinics and manufacturers simply closed the doors for business.
And, all this ignores the angry dad factor (innate immunity). In a lot of the younger vaginas, there are angry dads that won't let penises around the vaginas. I'm sure we all have stories about these cockblocks from our younger days, amirite?
And these [expletive] [expletive] do things like kill any unidentified penis that comes around the vagina.
Now bringing it back to the quoted article, and the overall state we're in, I'm sure some of you were wondering where I was going.
The condoms expire quickly, whatever. Delta is a horny little [expletive] having unprotected sex with some vaginas. We're still producing condoms when we see delta and we're still killing babies before they're born. All the while, angry dads are running around protecting the vaginas and, while not previously said in the analogy, are more heavily armed due to either being gifted a dildo or real penis previously in his life.
Oh, and everyone measuring the condoms available - and commenting on that - are ignoring how quickly they can be made and how quickly we can abort a pre-born little penis. And, as such, are exaggerating the meaning of the lack of condoms/danger of the penis to those with firsthand knowledge of the dildo...or penis.
