I can't tell if network TV is getting better, or I'm just becoming old and boring and therefore more likely to watch network TV.

she had a grip in wide and open spaces
Truly, her work in How to Make Popcorn on the Stove was some of the finest acting this side of Olivier.

Watch some old episode of Just Shoot Me and Reba. If you enjoy those shows you are officially a boring person.

Heh... no thanks.

I just find myself watching and even looking forward to a few network shows now. And that hasn't been the case since I was a kid in the 80s (other than some Fox animated shows).

Specifically, Black-ish, The Good Place, and The Goldbergs.

Why are they resurrecting old shows? Roseanne, Murphy Brown, Will & Grace. Sounds about as enticing as a geriatric old guys comedy (yes, I know that's redundant).

Don't forget X-Files, Dallas, Dynasty, plus 80s movies turned in to weird versions of themselves as TV shows on MTV (Teen Wolf... WTF on that one).

I can kind of get behind Murphy Brown just because the idea of a strong woman working in the news in today's world could provide a fresh take. And I can kind of get behind the X-Files because it's all about how [expletive] up and untrustworthy the government is, which is also very prominent right now.

But if you're a network head and you find that [expletive] appealing, make your own damn NEW show that explores those themes.

Speaking of old trash, I've been on a nostalgia trip lately. There was a television miniseries from 1980 called Shogun. It's about an English captain, played by Richard Chamberlain, who travels to feudal Japan and rises to the title of samurai. In the late 80's I watched a rerun of it on TV and I absolutely loved it. Being a pre-internet kid from Rockford IL it was exciting to get transported to such an exotic location. A few weeks ago I was thinking about it and decided google it. I found all 9 hours of it on youtube. I'm like 7 hours in and I can say it's extremely dated and not great, but I can't stop watching it. I suspect it felt even a little dated when Shogun came out in 1980, because it's presented more like a movie epic from the 50's.

On the other hand, in some ways it's surprisingly progressive. It was all shot in Japan and they use Japanese actors who bring respect to their culture. Shooting in Japan also means it looks great, although a little sanitized. Also, Shogun sensationalized I'm sure, but I've read a lot of it is culturally actuate. Another interesting choice is they don't use subtitles, which means you truly get the perspective from the Englishman in a strange land. Sometimes, as a viewer, you have to accept you don't know what certain people are talking about.

One thing that's funny to me watching it now that I'm older is how awful the the English character is. He's always making brave, but stupid decisions, that negatively impact everyone around him. My younger self didn't pick up on that at all.

I'm enjoying Shogun, but OMG it's cheesy and I can't recommend it, but here's the youtube link if you're interested:

The new x-files feels like a parody of the original episodes.
