My issue isn't with Cushing in particular. Say Bob Zemeckis decides to make a movie about Hollywood in the 40's and he gets permission to use the likenesses of Humphrey Bogart, Katherine Helpburn, Peter Lorre, etc... Any of those actors could get sold out by their great grandkids. He gets voice actors to do their parts, and the tech is at the point where it looks convincing.

I do think Cushing is a bit different. He consented to have his likeness used for merchandise, and took part in the original movies. Though it also wasn't with the understanding that he'd be "seen" giving a performance he didn't really give.

I'd also hope in this arrangement relatives not only get compensated, but get any royalties a living actor would.

A couple of articles that get into this:

Dumbledore being replaced is what I've been thinking of. Michael Gambon looked nothing like Richard Harris, and didn't even try to act like him. Even if the tech was there, I'd have still preferred replacing him as they did. The movies don't suffer from it either.

A lot here about legal, rather than ethical, issues:

Mods - feel free to spin this off into another topic.

i think he'd be game for it; more so than an alec guinness re-appearance
Cushing contrasted sharply with co-star Alec Guinness in that he enjoyed his experience on the film, appreciated the renewed interest in his work from young fans and only regretted that he could not appear in the sequels
Not too surprised there. Cushing was a horror movie vet at the time. Hard to pick a favorite title from his resume.

Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell
And Now the Screaming Starts!
Incense for the Damned
Scream and Scream Again

This is not a knock on Cushing either.

I love Cushing.

He was also Dr. Who in the 2 movies they did in the 60's.

I have always believed voice acting should be eligible for awards, it has to be really tough get the right emotions when you are in a recording studio.

Seeing Vadar be a bad ass like that at the end was exactly what I was hoping for. That and the fact that the very next scene could easily be the opening scene in the original Star Wars was awesome.

Loved the movie.

They should have a category for voice acting alone, shouldn't go against live action acting. Live action acting you still have to get into wardrobe, makeup, use body language/facial expressions and actually go film scenes on the set. I'm not taking away from voice acting but you show up to the same sound booth every time and could show up wearing sweatpants and a t-shirt if you wanted to.

Hopefully Carrie will be able to bounce back with a full recovery. Lucky for her she had the heart attack at the tail end of the flight and not somewhere over the Atlantic.
