Lucas had 9 planned from way back. Which isn't to say this is the same story he planned out, but I think most were hoping for 7, 8, and 9 when the prequels came out. I know I was.The Third Man wrote:But they're the ones that decided to make it a nine-part story, for which there's scarcely more need than if James Bond were a 24-part story. It's a movie series about a far-off galaxy that features hundreds (presumably) of planets full of wildly diverse creatures and environs. If Luke et al play some kind of major role in this movie, I'd be disappointed. Which isn't to say it couldn't otherwise be good - I'm just aggressively anti-nostalgia in this regard.

Re: movies
Back in my mega-Star Wars geek days in high school, I spent a lot of time wondering about prequels and sequels, before that Phantom Dickface monstrosity existed. Anyway, I recall an old interview of Lucas in which he said his initial idea was to have 9 episodes with C3PO and R2D2 as the only characters in all 9, with the more heroic people coming in and out of the story.ghostrunner wrote:Lucas had 9 planned from way back. Re: movies
Lucas's initial idea was to make a movie called "Star Wars". All this crap about trilogies and nine parts came after that. The theatrical release of "Star Wars" did not have the "Episode IV: A New Hope" heading to the opening crawl.

Kind of a nitpick, eh? From what I can tell, it was decided to be a multipart story by the time Empire rolled around. So thats 1980. The point is that the idea of a 9 part story has been around a long time. I was aware of it when the first trilogy came out.Vidor wrote:Lucas's initial idea was to make a movie called "Star Wars". I actually like it though. I don't think the side blades are as useless as they seem, and they should make a point of that in the film.go birds wrote:that light saber is dumb as hell

Re: movies
its not accurate to say he wanted to make a movie called "star wars" only. he had the idea of an epic space story but knew it wouldn't fit in one movie. the part about the rebels recovering and rising again was what he felt was most interesting/most bang for your buck to start with. one reason 1-3 are a bit boring, in my opinion, is cause its all about treaties and trade associations and all the bureaucratic "bs" that democracies go thru which leads to the empire taking over, etc. he also only really had ideas or thoughts or notes on what happened beforehand, 25+years earlier (from when they started working on 1-3)...which may explain why 1-3 aren't as good either, imo.ghostrunner wrote:Kind of a nitpick, eh? one of lucas' inspirations was the flash gordon film serials which, were numbered and had a quick scrolling recap of the previous events.

I like Star Wars but lack the reverence for it many of my peer groups do. I thought that was awesome.
