Nebraska may seem like a stretch, but they have a brand new arena, and they did make it to the NCAA tournament this year. They are a program that seems to be headed in the right direction.......... and they don't come with the controversy that Missouri does.

Nebraska was nowhere near headed in the right direction when Marshall turned them down. They were coming off of a 12-18 season and the last time they'd been to the tournament was 1998. Counting this year, they've made seven tournaments in their entire history.

And what "controversy" are you talking about? That Frank Haith just left?

Well, there was the Price kid who was just arrested for assault and kicked off of the team, right? And weren't there a couple of kids picked up for marijuana charges a month or so ago?

Listen, I'm not here to bad-mouth Missouri, and throwing Nebraska in there was probably a bit of a stretch (although I do like the direction of their program, and the new arena should help). Missouri is a legitimate NCAA basketball program. I just suspect that guys like Smart and Marshall are premier coaches, who will don't have much reason to leave unless they are offered a premier job.

I don't really disagree that Smart and Marshall are longshots, although there's something to be said for schools with more money (like Mizzou) compared to where they are (VCU and Wichita St.). The bigger issue is that those two are likely waiting for better opportunities- either a top shelf program, or an NBA job. For what it's worth, there's a decent source saying Marshall would be willing to listen (and also that it's still unlikely).

As for the Price thing, literally everyone involved with that is no longer with the program, up to and including the coach who kicked Price out of the program. The victim was a graduating senior on the squad. I'm quite certain that Mizzou isn't the only program with kids that got busted with weed and it'd be a really crazy reason for a coach to turn down a job. A quick google search turns up arrests in the last few years of players at UConn, North Carolina, Oklahoma St., Florida St., Ole Miss, Georgia...

As for Nebraska, ironically enough, the first real name to crop up in Mizzou's search is Tim Miles.

Fair enough, JL. Like I said, I wasn't meaning to minimize the Missouri program. They really had some nice momentum built up pre-Haith.

If Missouri could land Miles, that would be a really good get for them, in my opinion.
