Lots of people passed along rumors; very, very few of them have been correct. Bernie's have been right every step of the way, even when everyone in the world was waving their hands at the notion of Painter coming to Mizzou and not taking it seriously at all.
I'm a [expletive] idiot.

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue University and head men's basketball coach Matt Painter have agreed on a new eight-year contract through the 2018-19 season.

Terms of the contract were not disclosed.

"We are thrilled to announce that Matt will continue his leadership of our men's basketball program at his alma mater," athletics director Morgan Burke said. "He has been at the helm of the winningest four-year period in the storied history of Boilermaker basketball, and we pledge to work with him to win championships."

Wow, well that seems definitive. Damn. What a joke. Fire Alden.

Waiting for Bernie to write an article explaining how he doesn't look like an idiot and he never gave the impression that Painter was accepting the Mizzou job...time to be honest with my self....Mizzou will never be national champion threat in Football or Basketball...so this is what it feels like to be a cubs fan.

He should go back to what he does best. Write bad opinion pieces centered around "Don Tony". Seriously, what a hack.

It sounds like he was actually set to go to Mizzou like Bernie had reported, then had a change of heart as he was set to meet with his players.

I almost feel bad for whoever the next coach will be because there's no way he can be close to Painter.

Painter's still on vacation in Florida. He's never gone back to West Lafayette or Mizzou.

Bernie wrote:I am embarrassed and I apologize

I have been busy at Busch Stadium and this is the first chance I've had to write this post.

No excuses from me. I had what I believed to be very solid info from someone that has been 100 percent correct in the flow of information, at least up to now. And I went with it. Never said it was official, but I clearly gave everyone the impression that Matt Painter would be the next MU coach. And I fully believed that it would happen.

Well, wrong. So I have to wear it. Any criticism of me is justified. If I have lost credibility in your eyes, I deserve that. I have always taken pride in my reporting and in getting things right and I don't worry about being "first." But I trusted the information and proceeded with it. And I embarrassed myself and this news organization in the process.

I apologize to everyone, but especially those of you who put your trust in me. I am very sorry for letting you down. And I can assure you that I will work even harder and more diligently in the future to avoid this kind of failure again.

And thanks to those of you who already have conveyed your support on Twitter. I don't deserve it, but I can't tell you how much I appreciate it. You have no idea. I hope I can repair my credibility over time.

Thank you.

He's owning it.
