The Pittsburgh Pirates are going to give their home fans something to cheer about for the team’s 2026 home opener. The Pirates will call up shortstop Konnor Griffin, widely considered the best prospect in baseball, prior to Friday’s game against the Baltimore Orioles.
The move was announced hours before the team reportedly agreed to a record-breaking nine-year, $140 million deal with Griffin, per ESPN. That deal still needs to be finalized.

The Pirates have more money than the crook who owns the Cardinals.

Not sure why the Pirates don't trade Griffin to us for Pedro Pages and a PTBNL

Maybe last week. Ain't no way the Cardinals can afford that new contract.CardsofSTL wrote: ↑April 3 26, 8:31 amNot sure why the Pirates don't trade Griffin to us for Pedro Pages and a PTBNL

I would not think so. If they were going to give opt outs they would not have done the extension. He is under team control for six years without the deal.
This buys out three potential free agency years. I also saw it reported that there is no "no trade" protection so if they Pirates continue to suck they could trade him off.

Makes you think about what a JJ number would look like.
9 years 140M for Griffin; Roman Anthony got 8 years/130M last season. Colt Emerson got the 8 year/95M earlier this year.
I think with JJ being in his rookie year, if you want to do an extension, you look at 9/90M and then go up a few million or down a year and you can find a deal. If the Cardinals have any interest in it.

Definitely the trend to watch out for. Protects both sides of the deal as well.
