Attendance Policies
What is your company's policy on attendance?
Doctor's note required? Certain amount of notice? Must be dying?
It's getting out of hand with my staff and I'm wondering if others have attendance issues.

Re: Attendance Policies
Every company has attendance problems these days.
Our company operates on a 5-point system. If you acquire more than 5 points in a calendar year, you're out.
2 points for no-call, no-show
1 point for being absent (1st 3 incidents are excused, and do not count toward the point system)
1/2 point for being late, or leaving early

We're project based, so as long as you finish your work and bill enough hours, I don't care when you show up. Work it out with your team if it's short notice, but otherwise take it whenever you need to.

I love that about where I work now. If you're late a few minutes due to traffic, have an errand to run on the way, or have to take a kid to the dentist, it's no big deal. You can make it up later if you want to make up the time, or if you're hourly you can just lose the time. As long as you're doing you're work and you're not missing meetings.

Re: Attendance Policies
No-fault policy that is incident based and doesn't sort by type of infraction.
4 excused absences/year--tardy or call-off
After 4 excused, 1 point per for tardy and call-off.
3 points--written warning
5 points--final written warning
6 points--termed
No-call/no-show once without, like, being in the hospital or someone very close to you being dead or in the hospital or whatever and you're done.
Everyone is hourly but many in the front-of-house are tipped. So for them it can be a thing of "eh, it's no big deal, I'll call sick tonight to go to that concert because I had that private party this week and walked with $500 cash." In a job where people who are apt to not treat it seriously and as a career can make quick cash we have to have an assertive attendance policy to help them treat it seriously. Unfortunately, we can't have dual policies, so the policy for the servers applies to the barbacks and the cooks and the dishwashers as well--and cooks, physically, are not always in terribly great shape and health and need sick days.
Overall, I like a rigorous policy, because I think chronic lateness is rude and inconsiderate and selfish, and calling off for work without being sick is the same.

Re: Attendance Policies
I have a pretty simple policy. Any time I'm not working, I'm not getting paid.

Re: Attendance Policies
Our policy varies on hourly or salary. Our hourly get five sick days and are only allowed to be more than six minutes late a certain number of times before they start getting points that could lead to termination. 3 no call no shows in a year will get you canned too. And then even that varies by the department you are in. Before my two hourly co-workers were laid off our boss didn't go by those policies. However the people in the room with us are Customer Service and tied to the phones so they are strict about them.
For salary it also depends on the group by my bosses have never really cared as long as the work gets done. As long as I'm in the office by 9 they don't give one care. Even then being late is fine as long as it isn't a habit.
And now that I've been moved to a new group and am the only one in St. Louis... nobody would even know what I did. As long as I get my work done there is literally nobody to even know where I'm at at any given time. A couple of weeks ago I went out after softball and didn't want to get up the next morning... so I just worked from my couch all day. I was online and being productive all day during business hours but I didn't even leave the apartment and nobody even knew.

Re: Attendance Policies
I should also mention that before I was moved to my new group and in a new desk in a different part of the building, I still held myself to the same standards as the customer service reps out of respect for them. I didn't want them to see me just doing whatever I wanted while they couldn't. Got into that habit when I was the customer service analyst and actually worked for their boss' boss' boss.
Now I'm surrounded by people who are all salary, always in meetings (many times off site) so who cares. I have no idea what they do and they have no idea what I do so they'd never have a clue.
