Rave: Uber
Had my first experience with Uber over the weekend in Chicago. We took it basically everywhere except twice we took cabs because they were right there and Uber was going to be a ten minute wait. The app is great because you can see right where they are, they can call if there is a mix up and it's generally cheaper than a cab. Also the cars don't smell like santorum and are generally nicer. The drivers are way nicer too. Finally the drivers don't drive like insane people.

In the cities I've visited that had Uber, it's definitely more convenient that taking a taxi....not to mention it's typically a much nicer car.
I believe it just became available in St. Louis, but have yet to use it.

I don't think the regular Uber is available yet, just the fancy version. Unless something changed in the last week or so.

UberX is available in the Metro East, but I've had no use for it yet.

Re: Rave: Uber
It's unnecessary out here in New York, because in Manhattan you can hail a cab within a minute, unless you are a complete buffoon. It was fantastic in San Francisco, where I saw very few available standard cabs. Also, at least in SF, I used UberPool, hopped in a cab with some other random person sort of going the same direction, and it was 7 dollars. 7 bucks! I had like a half hour cab fare! Also seemed very affordable in my trip this may to LA - we took an uber from my cousins' home in South Pasadena like 30 something miles, and it cost 35 dollars.

Re: Rave: Uber
I may use Uber if it is cheaper than a cab but most of my cab rides to/from the bar are only $10 anyway. I've never had a problem with Laclede Cab though. I use their app and you can track where the cab is, get a fare estimate, etc. Plus using the app puts you at the head of the line. You literally get to leap frog the poor suckers who call and actually talk to a dispatcher. And if you want to pay through the app instead of dealing with cash or credit in the ride, you can. I don't ever bother with that.
It also helps that there are plenty of cabs around South City. I never wait more than 10 minutes most of the time, 20 minutes is a pretty rare happening.

Re: Rave: Uber
You'll get picked up in a second with Laclede if it's a decent fare, but shorter rides are a little sketchy. Drivers don't go out of their way to pick those up so it's just whether or not someone's in the vicinity where it makes sense. I hardly ever have a problem, but I waited 55 minutes a few nights ago for a 10 block ride. A driver picked it up 15 minutes in, then dropped it when he/she presumably found something more lucrative. That's the second time that's happened.
