Time Travel

A new movie called "The Time Traveller's Wife" inspired this article which attempts to glean from physics what might actually be possible.
So what do you think we might someday be able to do?

Re: Time Travel
Time travel into the future is possible today. Moving near the speed of light, time passes slower for you than the people at home.
Time travel into the past would be impossible without being very tricky to avoid the contradiction problem.

There's a theory that every sound ever created in the earth's atmosphere still exists and that with the right technology one could piece them back together. That would be a form of time travel.

Hmmm. Where'd you hear this? Is this intended in the same sense that once you jump in the pool, the resulting ripples never completely die out and only become more and more attenuated?G. Re: Time Travel
There is no way in hell...
Saying that, what do you think people 300-400 years ago would have said if you would have told them about phones, computers, tvs or iPods? So I can't really say that it's impossible. I just know I'm not going to get to see it which kind of sucks.

I heard it on an NPR show called "Ideas" that airs here on Saturdays. The program is produced by the CBC. The episode was all about sound. I'm not sure what the physics are behind it but my hunch was that they are something similar to that, yes.Arthur Dent wrote:Hmmm. Where'd you hear this? No way for humans. I could see maybe sending an inanimate object maybe, but no peoples.

Re: Time Travel
well, assuming we ever have the ability to move humans at close to c. We are, of course, no where near that capability today.pop_haines wrote:Just want to mention that future time travel was predicted by
Einstein's Special Theory of Relativity and has been confirmed.

Like Arthur says, we can do this now; no BS.
