Would you still extend Zambrano?

Would three bad starts give you second thoughts on an $80 million extension for a guy who had been very good til this season? Is there more at work that is causing his lack of control, high walk and homerun rates?

"Carlos Zambrano allowed two home runs and five runs this evening in six innings. He walked five. His ERA after four starts is a high altitude 7.77. At this point, I have to assume the Cubs are having second thoughts about completing the contract extension. He's now allowed six homer on the season, after giving up just 21 and 20 the previous two seasons. No control and long balls; that's not a pitcher worth tens of millions of dollars."

But I'm hoping his slow start makes the Cubs hesitant to do so so he gets out of the division.

Making an $80mm decision on the basis of four starts is very short-sighted. But to stretch those four games out, I can offer these thoughts, which suggest that maybe -- only just maybe -- the problem has been longer in coming than those four starts.

I still think it's a bad idea to sign him long term. I thought this before the season started and I don't think three bad starts in a row to start the season mean anything. He's crapped out like this for stretches before.

It's tough to say without having seen him pitch. But if he's having a lack of command, then it would certainly give me pause. I'd feel a lot better about it if his velocity is still up.

And no, I wouldn't. He's got to pitch his way back into form if he wants a big contract.

There was a very good article written last week at Beyond the Boxscore about Zambrano. It projects him looking forward and shows some PECOTA comparables. Some names like John Smoltz and Freddy Garcia are on the list, but so are the likes of Mark Gubicza, Dean Chance, Jose Rijo, etc....
