I know they were 0-4 in '85 which turned out ok, and in '73 I think it was they were 1 and some teen number to start.

You can go to baseballreference.com and look it up.

Okay, okay...I went to baseballreference and did my own research. Thanks for the link, Jim. I went back to the 40's and looked up 0-x starts and 20 game splits. Here are the results:

1997, 0-6, 7-13, 73-89 overall
1973, 0-5, 4-16 (1-11), 81-81 overall
1960, 0-5, 9-11, 86-68 overall
1985, 0-4, 8-12, 101-61 overall

Notes:

* 1997 saw the worst start ever, pretty disappointing follow up to the 96 season and the tough loss to Atlanta. Walt recently said that NOT turning over the roster that off season was his worst mistake ever. History repeating?

* 2004 started 0-2 and pretty average at 10-10, but they did win 105 that year, so...

* Looking at the 20 game splits I found that most of the season starts were pretty average at best, nothing big like an 18-2 or anything. Cards are pretty slow starters it seems.

Feel free to hit the sight and do your own searches for WS seasons, seasons after WS, etc. It's a great resource.

I almost posted that we did have a lot of turnover this season, but did we really? We really didn't add that many people, just sort of shuffled the deck and put the same players into different roles. The offense and bench are virtually untouched, with only Kennedy replacing Belliard (not much of an upgrade).

If this season does tank (and I'm not saying it will) I think only part of the reason could be lack of turnover in the roster. Much of that was dictated by the ridiculous FA contracts that were being handed out to very mediocre people.

Walt added Kennedy,Wells and Springer. He let Suppan,Belliard and Weaver walk. I do realize that it was a tough offseason unless they way overpaid, but I would like to see the Cards overpay every once in a while. I'm not giving up on the season yet, but I'm a little worried about this team.
