Whole family went to see it and loved it. I was the only one who watched it and realized that Tarkin couldn't possibly be Tarkin -- and not because of the CGI, just the age of the actor. They did a good enough job with him that slightly more than casual fans can watch it, immediately recognize the character from the other movies, and not even question that it was real.

I'm sure if you're going in knowing that Peter Cushing is dead that you could pick apart things of it that makes it look fake. But if you're not looking to do that it's fine and not that hard to suspend disbelief. Tarkin is just too much a part of the Death Star to not have him involved in the story onscreen at all.

I wonder if Cushing hadn't died and there wasn't a 40 year difference in the production of the movies to where he could still pull off the role if they wouldn't have just made him the central villain of the movie and have never created the Orson Krennic character.

I thought the Tarkin scenes were more convincing than the early Vader scene.

But the final scenes with Vader were bad ass.

Occurs to me that seeing it in the big IMAX theater might have been a factor in how noticeable it was.

And the bigger problem to me is still the ethics of it. I saw someone suggest that Charles Dance or Ralph Fiennes could have played the part, and that would have been great. Charles Dance in particular. Or just use the guy they had read the lines, who looks a lot like him. Also interesting that they did replace actors for Mon Mothma and the white haired general in the Rebel Base, yet chose to resurrect Cushing for Tarkin.

I'm sure if they could have just simply found a flesh and blood actor to replace Peter Cushing they would've gone that route instead. But he's got such a unique facial structure with high cheekbones that isn't as easy to do.

Lots of different ways they could have handled it. Give most of his lines to another character, and only show him in the first scene reflected in the glass. Have Krennic communicate with him via hologram and show him from the back. Or best of all IMO, just hire an actor with somewhat different facial structure. Wouldn't be the first time to have a new actor play the same character, and the movie really wouldn't suffer a bit.

But I'm beating a dead horse at this point, and it's a small thing as this particular movie is concerned.

I am on the opposite camp, I loved the parts with Tarkin, and I am a Cushing fan. He was one of my favorite characters from A New Hope, plus, Cushing is brilliant in the role in a New Hope. Seeing him again in Rogue One was a great moment in the movie for me personally. If his family and business people signed off on it, what is the problem?

I don't think they could have used another actor and had the movie work as well. One of the coolest things about the movie, for me, was how closely it tied in with A New Hope. Toward the end of the movie, I started to realize that you could almost think of Rogue One as the first two hours of A New Hope. They almost make one seemless movie.

In fact, I would like to watch Rogue One again and then immediately go home and start A New Hope and just see how seemless it really is. I'm sure some people have done this.

If they had not used the same Tarkin in both films, that connection would not have been as strong.

i think he'd be game for it; more so than an alec guinness re-appearance
Cushing contrasted sharply with co-star Alec Guinness in that he enjoyed his experience on the film, appreciated the renewed interest in his work from young fans and only regretted that he could not appear in the sequels
