Re: 2013-2014 Blues (Hockey) Season
This is a hell of a trade. The Blues get possibly a better defenseman, at least a solid one who is comparable talent wise, (though they play very different games, they are both #4/5 type guys) AND a 3rd round pick. The new guy is a better skater and has some offensive instincts.
EDIT to add: I like Polak a lot. He plays nasty. I wish we could have both him and Gunnarsson, and would drop Jax or Leopold instead, but you have to give value to get value.

Spezza vetoed a trade to Nashville. One less suitor would seem to indicate a weakened market. Might still be in play for the Blues if they miss on Stastny.

If he could be had for a 1 year 4m deal like Derrek Roy or someone like that, he'd be a great addition. But he's likely going to command 5-6m for 5-6 years.
Vincent Lecavalier is a good comparison. He was 33, was on a downward trend offensively. He got 5 years at 4.5m. Some desperate team is going to give Gaborik a 3-4 year deal, and paying a 37 year old Gaborik 6% of our salary cap seems like a really bad idea.
Oooofffffaa....they'll be regretting that in a few years. I figured they'd give him a contract, but I was more thinking a 3 year 10-12 million. With his injury history (leg & hip issues) there's almost a zero chance he'll be playing until he's close to 40

I'm getting excited for tomorrow. With the pre free agency dialogue period, or whatever it's called, stastny should know what teams and offers he has. I expect him to sign quickly tomorrow. I hope we go for broke and sign him and trade for spezza.

I wouldn't hate it, but I also know it's not happening.
My preferences, in order:
1. Sign Stastny
2. Trade for Spezza
3. Trade for Jumbo Joe

I didn't think about Thornton. I'd take him. I've also heard Eric Staal may be available.
I'm willing to go for broke. Trade our top pick next year, Rattie/Jaskin, and a roster player for one of the top guys available. I'd even give up Oshie if they won't take Berglund. Just don't trade Tarasenko, Schwartz, Petro or Shatty. Everyone else is available.
EDIT: That's in addition to signing Stastny. The window is NOW.

Pierre LeBrun
So in a league where it's seemingly impossible to acquire top-end centers, Jim Nill picks up Tyler Seguin and Jason Spezza within 12 months

I've got a bad feeling the Blues are gonna come up empty in acquiring this big name goal scorer

Wow, Chiasson is a stud. Gotta give to get, though.
