If they extend Hicks you have to pretty much lose any remaining Mozeliak faith.

Here’s my list of players that I think will be on another team next week: Montgomery, Flaherty, Hicks, DeJong, Stratton, & O’Neil.
The only player on that list I hope we could re-sign this winter is Montgomery. Which of course means my list will be completely wrong.

That’s Mopractice. Not trading Hicks would be really foolish. Get prospects now, re-sign him after the season if you really want to. Not sure why you’d want to. he throws 104, yet doesn’t strike people out at a rate you’d expect from someone throwing 104. No command, over 5 w/9, oft injured.

Plus he's great at late-night beer runs.

To be fair, his K% this year has been excellent. His walk rate is still too high though. But he's been pretty much nails for the last 2 and a half months.Mdcardfan60 wrote: ↑July 25 23, 5:47 pmThat’s Mopractice. Not trading Hicks would be really foolish. But yeah. just trade him and re-sign him. I don't see the benefit of not trading him. You can get a 2 for 1. Only reason I could see is if the offers have just been nothing, and I just don't see that being realistic. And even in that instance, something is better than nothing.

I’m trying to understand the cards strategy of telling the media exactly what they would like to do.

I agree with all of this. I feel like he’s been pretty good. He’s third on the staff in FIP, among people with enough innings to matter. Behind Helsley and Stratton.Magneto2.0 wrote: ↑July 25 23, 5:54 pmTo be fair, his K% this year has been excellent. His walk rate is still too high though. This is the correct take. Not saying the cards should do this, but this is the upside.Lesson wrote: ↑July 25 23, 4:15 pmWhy risk losing him as a FA when you can extend him and likely at a more reasonable rate to allocate $ elsewhere for 2024?cardsfantx wrote: ↑July 25 23, 4:07 pmcrazy...trade him and get prospects
Then you can sign him in the offseason if you want

Hard disagree. Trade him while his stock is high and see what lottery tickets you can get in return.dmarx114 wrote: ↑July 25 23, 9:32 pmThis is the correct take. Relievers are the most volatile commodity in baseball. For the Cardinals, they seem to be especially short-lived. Sure as the sun will come up tomorrow, Hicks will soon turn back into a pumpkin with a 105 mph fastball as soon as he's extended.
Honestly - when was the last time a Cardinal reliever was effective and healthy for 2+ seasons in a row? Jason Motte, 10+ years ago?
