Then you can sign him in the offseason if you want
Why risk losing him as a FA when you can extend him and likely at a more reasonable rate to allocate $ elsewhere for 2024?
don't see how we risk anything....he obv knows if he wants to stay here if he's talking an extension
what's spending a few months in say LA or somewhere going to change? if he gets traded to the dodgers say, and loves it there and then wants to sign an extension after the season with them instead? well then that just shows you how much work we have to do as an organization, if spending 2-3 months with a team completely changes your outlook.
I don’t think situations like Chapman leaving NYY and coming back are that common and I don’t see any harm in keeping Hicks if he intends on extending between now and the TDL. Same with Montgomery.
Flaherty can go, however, and hopefully TON(not DC) and DeJong.
Either Mo is desperately trying to pump up O'Neill's and Hick's value, or he is about to have a really terrible trade deadline.
Committing to TON publicly only hurts Carlson's value. Extending Hicks who has been wildly inconsistent and will cost more due to his high potential makes no sense. He's been good for like 10 games now and has a lot of incredibly frustrating periods. People wanted to release him earlier this season.
If you extend anyone, extend Montgomery. We have Mikolas, Matz, and Liberator for our rotation. Why not sign the guy we know rather than take a chance on an incoming FA? Especially because we now have to pay the "you might be publicly called out by your manager and GM for no reason" tax.
He's been good lately, and I can understand wanting to explore the possibility before shipping him off, but I'm incredibly underwhelmed by the idea of devoting any resources to a reliever who walks 5/9 when they have one decent starting pitcher for next season.
I just wouldn’t sign any reliever to another contract, full stop.
2021 is what happens when you go cheap on relievers (and starting pitching) and force your manager to use one particular reliever in a situation he shouldn’t have been in due to poor BP construction.
