Just curious....is that how much these bottle of bourbon cost?
They're worth what you can get for them. A store near here has a bottle of Pappy 12 for $800 and 18 for $2000 from last year and he'll probably sell them eventually.

A 1989 WL Weller Special Reserve is so rare that it would be impossible to appraise without knowing more than I do. I'm sure middle knows though. I don't think $1000 is unrealistic.

The [expletive] part of it is the significance though. It's easy to get $1000. It's nearly impossible to get that whisky, and for someone like middle who loves it, that's an absolutely disgraceful thing to do.

They cost me almost zero, so it's not really about the money.

One was a gift.

The other, here's the play, which was taught to me by the guy who gifted me one of those. You go to estatesales dot net. You look at estate sales in your area. I look in and around Chicago, the burbs, as far south as Bloomington/Normal, parts of WI and MI. I see one with a pic of a bar, and there's booze on it. I reach out to the person conducting the estate sale. "Hi there, I see you're conducting this estate sale. Anyhow, there's a bar with booze on it and you can't legally sell the booze, so I was wondering if there's a fair amount there, and if there is, I'll make it worth your time to hold it for me." I find out what's there, then I hop in the car and go, with a couple hundred bucks cash in my pocket. I've gotten pretty lucky with some of these. A couple times, for $150-200, I've left with 10 cases of booze. Some of it is junk. Old bottles of Galliano that I open only to take a sip to see just how bad it is, then dump it down the drain. But then among the junk there will be a case of 1980s Old Forester or something. I've been doing this for a few years, 3-4 times a year. I've never come across a single Van Winkle, which I figure is because either the children of the estate or the estate manager sees it and knows what it is, but I have a fair bit of very cool vintage stuff that I got for next to nothing.

I've drank a little, I've given quite a bit away to friends, and I've traded a few to get something else I want, but I've never sold any. I'd guess those two little bottles could fetch a couple hundred bucks.

What kind of weasel does that, honestly?

First off, I don't like drinking other people's miller lite. Makes me feel like too much of a mooch. I can't even fathom taking a drink of soemone else's pappy without feeling guilty, let alone duping a significant other into drinking a guys 30 year old whisky that I knew he was saving for a special occasion. What a douchenozzle. Guaranteed he's a cubs fan and became one last year...

I don't think he's a sports fan, so you're probably spot on that he is celebrating his one-year anniversary of caring about the Cubs.

I think--actually, I'm pretty sure, from talking to him the couple times I've met him--that he's a big time foodie who's obsessed with what new restaurant or bar is opening, and stuff like that. But he's also kind of a broke hipster so, ooh, there's that thing I covet but I can't find/afford, and he's all in on it. I don't dislike Cubs fans but I can't stomach obsessive foodies who won't shut up about restaurants, so he's lower than a Cubs fan in my book even sans the whole drinking my booze thing. I also found an empty bottle of Old Fitzgerald that was maybe 1/3 full in the recycling this morning, which goes for $13, so I'm guessing there was some kind of guilt associated or something kicked in and that bottle got finished instead of more of the good stuff being opened.

Anyway, I really don't know what to do. Themissus54 is really tight with her yoga buddies and the GF of Buzz is one of her closest friends in that circle and they hang out a lot, the two of them, when I'm at work at night. So I don't feel like I can confront the guy, or ask my wife not to un-invite him when she hosts the monthly dinner party thing again, because it might cause some embarrassment and static between her and one of her closest pals.

On the other hand, I kinda feel like the guy stole from me. Even under the kind of assumed rules of inviting people over for dinner where there is booze and food and it's hey, help yourself, he stepped over the line. Bigly.

He did steal from you, AND took advantage of your wife because he suspected she didn't know the rarity of that bourbon but that douchebag obviously did. Sooooo, now not only did he drink that he polished off even more booze?

Hell, if anything you'll be doing your wife's best friend a favor letting her know she's dating a douchebag that has no problem treating her friends like [expletive].
