I really like Episode III.

I thought Episode I was so-so and has fun stuff for kids (myself included)--like the underwater scene and the pod races. I'm not sure if you could get a kid to sit through Episode II--half of that movie is a date montage. II is the only one I dislike with any energy.

I basically agree, but it does piss me off that Lucas stuck Hayden Christensen in as Anakin Skywalker's spirit in the Return of Jedi dvd. That does taint the originals with the stink of the prequels.

Is that the worst casting decision in the history of movies if you take into account the significance of the role and the expectations from fans? That dude was just too vacant to convincingly project any kind of pathos.

I wonder if it's not just Lucas. Natalie Portman is intermittently awful/boring in those movies. I don't think I've seen Christensen in anything else, but I think a better director might have pushed for more. I'd also bet that Spielberg could've gotten a better performance out of Jake Lloyd. There are suppositions or anecdotes out there that Lucas was surrounded by a bunch of yes men during the prequels, whereas during the original trilogy he had actors and producers pushing back on some of his ideas and/or contributing more.

Return of the Jedi really suffered with the digital additions. The Ewok yub-nub song is gone, Christensen's in there instead of David Prowse, and then that music scene in Jabba's lair is an atrocity. I remember as a kid watching the making of Jedi on PBS and some guy down below the stage set having to do all the movements for that long-snouted singer character. They had it rigged so that she moved however he did, and he's wearing all this apparatus. The poor SOB was down there for hours probably sweating his ass off and has nothing to do with that scene now.

about 13 mins in or so is when they talk jabba lair. and yes, that digital version is awful.

I had no idea he did this. I'm glad I still have the originals on VHS.

Christensen was pretty good in Shattered Glass. I've always had this picture of Lucas all pissed off yelling cut and shouting at his actors to not demonstrate any emotion whatsoever, and making them eat cardboard in front of the crew as a demonstration lesson for those prequels.

I heard a bit on the radio this morning about the deleted scenes from IV. Here's a link with some discussion and clips.
