We're finally starting to feel like a big time program!

This season has the potential to really suck. First of all, they play 5 crappy teams to start the season so anything less than 5-0 is bad. Losing Derrick Washington ([expletive] you, DWash) is a killer and they may end up 8-4 or 9-3 and beat no one at all that's any good.

I don't think that losing Washington is that big of a deal. Lawrence has loads of talent in his own right, maybe even more than Washington (albeit unproven); Washington was coming off of a pretty mediocre season; and that position at Mizzou has much less importance than it does for the majority of schools in college football.

Obviously, given the choice of Washington or Lawrence, it's a no-brainer. But I don't think it's going to kill their season.

As for 8-4 or 9-3, that's what I was expecting out of them anyway, with Washington. Hell, I was gonna be happy with 9-3. Other than the 2007 peak, Mizzou always loses to one school they should beat. There are eight teams on their schedule that should be wins. Could be a loss to Iowa St. Could be to K. State. Could be Kansas. Could be Illinois.

And then they have that four game stretch. OU is almost a guaranteed loss, one of Tech or aTm should be a win, and then Nebraska's a coin flip (with the Huskers holding the advantage since it's a home game). So... 7-1 in the ones they should win, 1-3 in that four game stretch... Maybe 2-2 if they can steal two of the three road games against Tech, aTm, and Nebraska.

9-3 with one of those wins being v. Nebraska would probably get them a Big XII North title.

That applies to pretty much every school in the country, or at least any school that's projected to be any good.

For them to get to 10 wins and to win the North, they're going to have to beat Nebraska and one of OU, aTm, and Texas Tech. Those are all good teams. Two of them are in the pre-season top 10.

I still can't buy Nebraska as a top 10 team. They have a couple of legit studs on defense and a decent running game on offense. They still haven't even named a [expletive] quarterback. Suh was one of the most disruptive forces in college football history, making that D seem a lot better than it was. If a team can jump out in front of them by two or three scores they are screwed. I think they are a good candidate to lose some unexpected games. That said, they'll probably hang around the top 10 most of the year because their schedule is so weak.

RE: Iowa State-I would actually like that team as a sleeper to surprise some people. They can run the ball really well and play a little D. Then I looked at their schedule... @ Iowa, TTech, Utah, @ OU, @ Texas, Neb, Miz. That's just demoralizing for a program that was making some strides.

RE: Texas Tech-I'm not sure if I would call them a good team JL. I haven't followed them much this offseason so I don't know how much continuity there will be with Tuberville. He's a defensive coach so maybe they improve on that side of the ball (although statistically they were pretty good last year) but maybe the offense takes a step back without Leach. Tuberville probably wants to run the ball more but they might not have the personnel to pull that off yet. I like Mizzou to win that game.

aTm will probably be a shootout. That one's a coin flip. I don't give Mizzou much chance to beat OU. I think they are the best team in the Big XII despite the pollsters overrating Texas.

I'm kind of leaning towards 10 wins for the Tigers.
