That said, lets give Sanford time. He seems like a solid prospect. Not great. Not amazing. Solid.

Blues are clearly reloading now with younger players to put around their core of Tank, Schwartz, Petro and Steen. We probably shouldn't have resigned Steen if we were going to reload, but oh well.

I agree. I'm not happy with the trade, but I've mostly made my peace with it. Still seems like they could've gotten a better prospect if they tried and most certainly should've gotten the 2019 2nd guaranteed. What are the chances we get that pick... 10%, maybe? Also, for arguments sake, which would you rather prefer: the Caps make the ECF and Shatty plays, so we get the 2019 2nd rounder and a 2017 pick in the 28-31 range OR the Caps get upset in the first round and we get a 2017 pick around 22 but no 2019 pick?

I really want to believe in Sanford. Good size, good speed, plays all three forward positions, made the Caps to start the season. If he becomes a top six forward, this is all good. If he's a third line center... well, we have 97 of those already.

The Copley/Malone part of this deal is still utterly stupid. Even if you think Copley peaked, you can do better than a career AHL goon. I suspect the motivation is to open up playing time for Husso, but this is still weak.

I still believe Doug Armstrong is toast at season's end. He had his head in the clouds wanting Dylan Larkin or David Pastrnak for Shatty. He insisted on making a "hockey trade" for 22 at the draft. He brought back a coach for his swan song and decided that it made perfect sense to do that while going backwards with his roster. Coupled with awful extensions to Bouwmeester, Gunny and especially Lehtera... bye Doug.

No moves from the Blues today. I wish we could've sold some more pieces, but with these bloated contracts, I guess that wasn't possible. The other teams we're competing with for either a wild card spot or better standing in the division all made buyers moves today (Kings added Iginla, Flames added Lazar, Predators added Parenteau).

The Blues should have just blown it up and traded everyone over 25. Armstrong seems to have painted the team into the dreaded mediocre corner. The worst thing I think you can do is play it half-way and that's essentially what he did with letting Backes and Brouwer go and trading Shattenkirk while giving extensions to Steen and Berglund. It's really puzzling. He has to see that all the recent cup winners were built around elite forwards and/or d-men drafted in the top half of the draft.

Sounds like Sanford will play on the 3rd line tomorrow with Berglund and Paajarvi. Also getting some PP time at practice (so is Jordan Schmaltz).

They've turned back into garbage. Seems like now the goalies are the only ones showing up.

So the Blues trade Shattenkirk for a 1st rounder next year & a 3rd line centerman when the team that WAS behind them in the standings (LA Kings) decided to go it and pick up Iginla & Bishop.

I think it's obvious which team wants to make a run & which one has written off the season.

This is probably for the best. Honestly they need to retool. I just wish they'd sold off more pieces... but Upshall was probably the only one they could've realistically moved.

The biggest difference I can see between how the Blues and Blackhawks are run is they only look to lock up top end talent (Kane, Toews, Panarin, Keith, Seabrook). Role players get rotated out after a few years, and even when they make a mistake on a guy like Bickell, they package him with a perceived asset like Teravainen to get out from it.

We have top end talent locked up too (Tank, Petro, hopefully Schwartz again), but we also do it with either declining talent (Steen) or guys who were never going to be that (Gunny, Bergy, and worst of all, Lehtera). I'll even give a pass on J-Bo, who got hurt and hasn't been the same since.
