That said, lets give Sanford time. He seems like a solid prospect. Not great. Not amazing. Solid.
Blues are clearly reloading now with younger players to put around their core of Tank, Schwartz, Petro and Steen. We probably shouldn't have resigned Steen if we were going to reload, but oh well.
I agree. I'm not happy with the trade, but I've mostly made my peace with it. Still seems like they could've gotten a better prospect if they tried and most certainly should've gotten the 2019 2nd guaranteed. What are the chances we get that pick... 10%, maybe? Also, for arguments sake, which would you rather prefer: the Caps make the ECF and Shatty plays, so we get the 2019 2nd rounder and a 2017 pick in the 28-31 range OR the Caps get upset in the first round and we get a 2017 pick around 22 but no 2019 pick?
I really want to believe in Sanford. Good size, good speed, plays all three forward positions, made the Caps to start the season. If he becomes a top six forward, this is all good. If he's a third line center... well, we have 97 of those already.
The Copley/Malone part of this deal is still utterly stupid. Even if you think Copley peaked, you can do better than a career AHL goon. I suspect the motivation is to open up playing time for Husso, but this is still weak.
I still believe Doug Armstrong is toast at season's end. He had his head in the clouds wanting Dylan Larkin or David Pastrnak for Shatty. He insisted on making a "hockey trade" for 22 at the draft. He brought back a coach for his swan song and decided that it made perfect sense to do that while going backwards with his roster. Coupled with awful extensions to Bouwmeester, Gunny and especially Lehtera... bye Doug.
