Oh, it's real. I actually had a manager once pass out the sheet music to this gem at a department meeting and we had a sing-a-long (well, he sang while we tried not to explode with laughter).Tambourine Man wrote:Is that real? My company does some cult-like stuff, but I don't know that we have a theme song. I've seen to many high-fives around the center...Once cool people were transformed.
Really. I would not kid about something like that.

Re: Corporate Speak
I think all corporations are pretty much set up as puppeteers with puppets. In a small corporation, you're basically being controlled by one person, who might be controlled by one other person. You feel important because you're close to the guy that holds the strings, but every time he pulls, the effect is more severe.
In a large corporation, the strings just keep going up the ladder. The guy at the top pulls a string, and there's a ripple effect down the ladder. But it's barely felt by you at the bottom. That's good that the ripple effect is less severe, but it's saddening that your efforts have little effect going up the chain.
This analogy makes sense in my head. Not sure if it makes sense in words.
EDIT: And I have no idea how that pertains to corporate speak.

Well, the government in England used to hang children for stealing bread to eat...ghostrunner wrote:Arthur Dent wrote:Is there a more soulless and anti-human invention than the modern corporation? It's so strange that it has become the dominant institution of our times.

I dislike the way corporations use the word "team" in a touchy feely way. You're a member of a team, until management decides they can make more profit elsewhere, then it's goodbye for Mexico or some other foreign company and don't worry about the "team" you leave behind.
I also don't care for the term "grow" like we are going to "grow" our business. The word increase works just fine in place of grow.

Yeah, you're a team until they can outsource your work to a foreign country for a fraction of the wages they're paying you. Then they're just being fiscally responsible for the shareholders.

Sorry, but I just don't see these corporations as evil, malevolent semi-human beings that are out to screw everything for the sake of the once-mighty dollar. I do see them very much like organisms that have their unique culture, personality, and hidden desires. I think it is fun trying to get inside them to figure them out, and then see how you can change them. It's like a giant host and you are an invasive little virus. Sometimes you get spit out (it's happened to me on a few occasions). Other times you get pretty far and leave a stamp on the place.

I don't really have anything against them either, I think most on the board know I work for one. I was just playing devil's advocate.Hungary Jack wrote:Sorry, but I just don't see these corporations as evil, malevolent semi-human beings that are out to screw everything for the sake of the once-mighty dollar. Anyone ever been "strongly advised" to contribute to the United Way by their company?
The last one I worked for advertised it a lot, and my boss once showed me a letter to him from the company saying what percentage of his paycheck they thought he should have direct deposited to the UW. It was strongly worded to, a " you sure don't have to, but you better"
