Not just that, but such coordinated collective action is very difficult--see Mancur Olson's The Logic of Collective Action, which is one of the great works of political economy of the last half-century.

I work for a government institution: a university with roughly 8,000 employees. Universities are often demonized for imposing lock-step conformity on others. We've had our share of bone-headed and even venal leaders. But getting us to work together is like trying to herd cats. I'm not interested in controlling my students' minds: they don't even read the assignments on the syllabus.

Forgive me cardinalkarp, but I think what you're talking about is concern about regulatory capture--that the institutions being regulated by government (pharmaceutical firms, in this case) have shaped laws and policies that protect them. That's different from the idea that 15,000 CDC employees are on the take, which beggars belief.

I'm not seeing anyone indoors. I'm not doing anything indoors that's not my house. Texas is a raging enferno of Covid, there are no ICU beds left in the state, and my son has a chronic lung condition. I can't risk getting it and spreading it to him.

Outdoors, sure, for vaccinated adults. Until my kids can get vaccinated, that's it.

My pancreas doesn't produce insulin. I chose to wed giant pharma rather than die much, much younger. It's not an ideal situation. They'll raise the price of Novolog 35% becore I finish fyping this, but these soul-less gougers are my bedmates. Their CEO will make $25 milliin plus this year and likely lay off a few thousand people. And I'm largely at their mercy, I can't divorce them at any reasonable cost.

Even if Covid was created so Obama and the ghost of John McCain can sell the Isle of Manhattan to the Chinese or Donald Trump could keep a promise to a pornstar he and Vlad pass around (trying to span the spectrum here), I think the better move, based on data, is to get the damn shot.

For my part the vaccine didn't make me THAT sexually attracted to lizards. I'll hang out with you outside though. Especially if you still have that skink.

I've kind of gotten to the point that I think everyone is going to get covid regardless of vax status. I don't see a path forward for my kids to avoid it and am (almost) certain littlest AW already had it as she had a fever of about 100 for roughly 8 hours and had a cough for a couple days. We didn't get her tested because Mrs. AW had tested positive 2 days before so there was an obvious exposure along with symptoms you'd likely expect from a 4 year old. Seemed pointless to get a test since it could, minimally, increase exposure to the tester and the results were irrelevant given we were all in quarantine already. Plus those tests suck for kids, my kids at least, since they're weenies.

That leaves only little AW without any confirmed natural or vaccine immunity though he sleeps in the same bed with littlest AW, continued to do so even when it was likely she had it, and they played like they typically do. Er, they fought like they typically do. So, it's possible if not likely he's been exposed enough to not have a naïve immune system. And, even if I'm wrong, and even if he's completely naïve, and even with the delta variant being more harmful to children, I still don't worry about him being affected all that much.

So, what's the point? Possibly preventing spread at his school? That's the biggest one. But, they're masked. And, see my original sentence. I don't think you can prevent this from becoming an endemic at the end. There's simply too much spread for people to avoid it. There's a part of me that also thinks it would be good for children to have some natural immunity built up in the event variants become worse in the future.

I agree with that all, for the most part. But right now, we have to flatten the curve again to reduce the burden on hospitals and frontline nurses and doctors. When there are so many people in the hospital with COVID that heart and cancer patients are being sent home prematurely, that's a HUGE problem. (I know you get this AW. Just keeping perspective.)
