I'd agree with that, though I thought Lithgow was excellent last season.

Eh... I'd disagree with that a whole lot. Actually, I think this season is the one where the show completely jumped the shark, and is the worst season to date.

Last season was amazing. This season, while I'm still enjoying it, has to be the weakest yet.

This season isn't even close to as bad as Season 2. For me, it's in the "interesting but flawed" band with Season 3. Like so:

Awesome
Season 1 and 4

Interesting but not quite Awesome
Season 3 and 5

DIE LILA DIE
Season 2

Season 2 at least gets points for originality because
[SHOW]
it was the first time he'd met someone else who wound up being a murderous serial killery person. But then they did it again with Jimmy Smits, which was just completely [expletive] stupid that a District Attorney just happens to be on the brink of insanity and on the verge of becoming a serial killer. And now it's happening again. "Oh, hi, nice to meet you Dexter. I'm Lumen. And I want to murder a whole bunch of people, too." It's so far beyond insulting our intelligence at this point. And yeesh, come up with something new. It's a new twist on the same old story line.

Don't get me wrong, I love the show. It's a lot of fun and the concept is great. But the writing is complete and utter horse [expletive]. And this season, there's just so much fluff, like LaGuerta and Angel, or Quinn and Deb. Or the really useless pursuit of the Santa Claus Nachos murderer guys. That's on top of the insane lengths that the show is stretching credibility at this point.

I've only seen the first four seasons. This is how I would rank them from best to worst: 1,4,2,3
[SHOW]
1- Best season. Everything ties together nicely, perfect actor to play the other killer, and you see a major transition in Dexter's personality and start to root for him.

4- Lithgow was awesome.

2- Lila was annoying and some of the Doakes stuff was pushing the limit, but I don't think it was nearly as bad as the third season.

3- Smits' character was not believable. There's a pretty big gap between "I hate it when criminals get away and I have some anger issues with my father" and "I want to stab people."

She seemed really hot when he first saw her in the meetings. She was this edgy and cool exotic looking chick. As you saw her more you realized her eyes were too far apart and she was way too desperate.

I don't understand why the plot has to constantly revolve around him almost getting caught. He's a serial killer who hunts serial killers. Seems like there should be a lot more story there without relying on this stream of narrow escapes.
[SHOW]
It took them way too long to ditch Rita and the kids. Best thing to me about this season is Dexter being more freed up to do his thing.

The Lumen thing is kind of a rehash, but on it's own merits I prefer it to either the Jimmy Smits or Lila story. I wouldn't call Lila a serial killer so much as [expletive] crazy in general.

I'm only on episode 7 now, but did the FBI just not care that Quinn's pic of Dexter looks like their sketch for Kyle Butler?

Best thing about this season so far might be Peter Weller. He looks like absolute [expletive], but he's been great.
