Re: "The Wire" Appreciation Thread
I just watched all of season 1 in like 10 days' time. Great show. It really demands a lot of its audience. The show throws you into two worlds - the criminal justice system of Baltimore and a criminal syndicate - with maybe a hundred characters, without any explanation or introduction. You just have to figure out who everyone is, and what role they play. I love that; the creators really respect your intelligence.
I also really enjoy what they did here: You have two organizations that, in theory, are diametrically opposed: the law, and the law breakers. But the show very cleverly shows the similarities between the two: the hierarchy, the corruption, the people with guilty consciences for what they do.
I also love how everything comes first circle. In the first episode's courthouse scene, McNulty tells Stringer Bell "nice work." In the final courthouse scene, Bell tells McNulty the same thing. In several episodes, a character is asked what he would least like to have happen; some of them learn how to answer that, some don't. There's also a number of times a character says "What the f*** did I do?" Each time it means something different.
Man, that's a good [expletive] show.

Wait till you get to season 4, it adds the Education system to the mix. Great, great stuff.

My thoughts were along the lines of 'better get watching while the watching's good.'ghostrunner wrote:HBO is not gonna like that.Centreville wrote:one can watch every episode from season 1 to 5 here: http://thewireseason.com

I just finished season 4. Man, that was a heartbreaker. Randy was my favorite character by far; what an amazing young actor, ranging from a radiating smile to sullen defeat.
