I think you missed something along the way. There was a post or picture where the black guy was saying 'Amberlamps'. My guess was that he was trying to say 'ambulance' but his mouth was bloodied.

They took that word and named my new girlfriend with the hot purple leggings.

Actually, a lot of people without bloodied mouths say Amberlamps.

and even if the nbc website people didn't know nip was a derogatory term for Japanese people you have to wonder why they would include it in a headline about women's sports...much less a women's sport that takes place in the cold on ice.

I really wouldn't have thought twice about it. I've also never heard of nips as a slur.
