Re: The Beer Thread
Just back from a quick jaunt up to Wisco and I made a stop at the Firm Worm Bait, Liquor and Grocery store in Arena Wisconsin to pick up a few samplings.
First up, Lake Louie "Kiss The Lips" India Pale Ale. It pours clean with an aroma of hops ... I would serve this in a ...
Oh screw it, who am I kidding. I'm drinking it out of the bottle, the bottle is brown so I can't see it and I can't tell the hue or color of this beer. Smell ... smells like Wisconsin River water to me. Taste... bitter. Very bitter. If you like very very very bitter beer, this is the one for you.
This is one bitter bitter bitter beer. This beer leaves a really bitter taste in your mouth, it peaks about 3 seconds after a sip and stays with you for a good long time. Bitter. Doesn't really go away that after taste. Kind of hangs around. So good news ... if you like the taste of bitter things - very very bitter things - you will really enjoy this beer. Can't really describe just how bitter this beer is. Can't really overstate the fact that it's bitter .. kind of impossible to understate that fact. It's bitter.
Yep, need to stop experimenting.

Capital Brewery, Rustic Ale. Recipe: One can of Budweiser, two Hershey chocolate bars, and a cup of coffee. Mix and serve.
Not for me. I bought two sixers in Wisco last weekend and came up empty.

Re: The Beer Thread
I have now had the Dogfish Head Nachos Santa Claus beer. It's really, really complex (in a good way). A damned fine beer...
but I still prefer the New Glarus Dancing Man Wheat.
Others I've had in the last week, and my grade for them:
-Dogfish Head Nachos Santa Claus/Polo Santa Marron: A-
Very, very good; maybe a little bit too much going on in it. Three stages of flavor are a bit much... although those three stages rocked.
-Dogfish 60 Day IPA: B
(I've gradually become less and less a fan of IPA's over the last year or so)
-Dogfish Head Midas Touch: A-
The premise is a neat little schtick. It's a higher alcohol content product that doesn't taste like one (compared to the Polo Santa Marron, where it takes you half a second to realize it's a higher alcohol content brew).
-New Glarus Bourbon Barrel Bock: A, with a caveat
The caveat: the bottles I had were aged two years. The beer really mellowed out and all the bourbony goodness rose to the top.
-New Glarus Iced Barleywine: B+
-New Glarus Olde English Porter: C-
-New Glarus Imperial Saison: D
Both of these were deliberately made sour, and I wasn't a fan at all. I appreciate that they were using older recipes to create this effect but it was [expletive] awful.
-New Glarus Honey Bock: B+
When I saw "honey", I sort of recoiled in fear. "Honey?", I thought. "Do they think I have a vagina?". But it's a bock, too, so I gave it a shot. It's fantastic. The honey doesn't overpower anything. They call it a "pale bock"- the brewing process is tweaked just a little to give it a lighter color and flavor- but it maintains all of the important pieces of a bock beer (very malty, slightly higher alcohol content, etc...).
-Lake Louie Tommy's Porter: B-
The line drive single of beers.

Re: The Beer Thread
Predictably, Select 55 tastes like someone poured 3 oz of Budweiser and 4 oz of water into a shoe.
It's like drinking NA, but you aren't that guy with a bottle of O'Douls. It's roughly 2.5% abv. If it didn't taste so bad it would be funny to see how many of these you could drink.

That product is pathetic in just about every way (and I say that without having tasted it).haltz wrote:Predictably, Select 55 tastes like someone poured 3 oz of Budweiser and 4 oz of water into a shoe.

If you want to watch your calories, don't drink [expletive] beer in the first place. Or drink less. Or eat less. Just don't insult the history of beer by making these fairy dust and unicorn beers.
