I'm sure this phenomenon of drunks drinking from growlers like winos from a paper bag exists somewhere but it's not the norm. Mostly it's beer lovers on their way home from work or those who have a pint or two but don't want to drive intoxicated.

Me I use a curly straw in my growler.
Is this to imply that one should not partake in the growler? I get one whenever friends come over for a game, etc.. I don't see the issue.
Your good with that. When my Mom was a kid, grandpa sent her down to the corner to get the jug filled with beer for the evening. Glad/jealous to see you guys have the right situation for that.

I've seen a few end of the night drunken growler buys (and been tempted myself)i.e " I've had a [expletive] great night and now I'm taking this show on the roooaddd baby!" Taking a pitcher of beer to-go doesn't work too well then.

That's like saying you're not impressed with Detroit baseball because you're from Kansas City.

I went there for dinner after my aforementioned New Glarus day trip. Very good beers. I don't think I tried many though, since I was driving, but I remember their IPA being quite good and I had a stout or maybe a porter that was also excellent. I love that they have those barrels behind the bar with the pump spouts, like an old English pub. The bar area is a great place to sit and drink.

Cask ale http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cask_ale

They are starting to become more accepted by American beer drinkers. The other night at Six Row I watched the bartender fill a pitcher with draft then pour it back and forth into another pitcher a bunch of times then let it sit to warm up creating a cask style flavor.

When I was in Wales I only drank Brains cask ale. It took about half a beer to get used to it.

They have a barleywine that I was drinking exclusively the last time I was there. Long story short, I wound up the perpetrator of a lost taco fiasco, passed out in the car on the way home, and then knocked over a potted plant in my friend's house. He had to stop mid-coitus with his wife to come clean it up because I couldn't even stand, much less clean up the remnants of a potted plant.

The trip to the Dane was preceded by a couple of Essen Haus boots.

Will get you every time, but good barleywine is as close to ambrosia as I get.

Barleywines have an ABV between 8 and 15%. Respect the high ABV.

Maybe you should be drinking Bud 55

I respect it, to be sure. But there's a fine line there where I'm stuck between my respect for the higher alcohol content, and the realization that I'm only going to get to drink at the Dane once a year. The respect for the scarcity of the product beats out the respect for the higher alcohol content every time.

EDIT: And yes, Jack, barleywines are excellent as a rule of thumb.

Drank the big bottle of Schlafly's Barleywine playing Wii with the kid. Nearly knocked me on my arse - though my Wii playing improved like WKRP Johnny Fever.
