How do you know when a politician/lawyer/baseball GM is lying?
They are talking.

The Red Sox are considering extending their budget to make another offer to Jason Bay, reports Rob Bradford of WEEI.com.
Such an offer wouldn't include a fifth year, presumably, but could see a bump from the original $60 million price tag. If Bay was to accept the deal, Boston would go over the luxury tax threshold, something the team would prefer to avoid. The deal would throw in doubt the role of Mike Cameron and/or Jacoby Ellsbury. While Boston could use Bay's stick, it is difficult to see Bay returning to town.

I think Ellsbury gets traded if that happens. There have been rumors of him being dealt for a while now and right now he's hyped up to be much better than what he actually is, so now is the time to deal him while his value is still high. Red Sox have plenty of players in their system capable of taking over center when Cameron is done there.
EDIT* that or Youk gets moved to 3b and they see if Bay can play 1b or play Ortiz at 1b and make Bay DH, but I'd rather deal Ellsbury and find a 2 year stopgap at 1B until Lar Anderson or Anthony Rizzo are ready.

According to Michael Silverman of the Boston Herald, the Red Sox "have not completely shut the door on re-engaging" in talks with Matt Holliday.
The Red Sox are also keeping a line of communication open with Jason Bay. Boston GM Theo Epstein and Co. have already made offers to both free agents but the proposals have so far been rejected. Holliday, who turns 30 in January, hit .313/.394/.515 in 2009 with 24 home runs and 104 RBI. He currently has an offer on the table from the Cardinals.
