To be honest I just curse like a sailor in relatively loose environments, and if that doesn't describe an internet forum I don't know what it does.

"[expletive] you, Schumaker" tends to make me think a little less of the person posting it, but so what? If we had people around here who were always at that level of discourse, their presence here would be a problem. The language filter does its job. If your mind is translating it for you, you're beyond saving anyway. Going scatological isn't typically the way I handle my emotions on the board but there are plenty of other posting tendencies that I find as annoying, and I don't think anyone should change his/her posting style to placate me.

Stuff like "[expletive] you Schumacher" doesn't really add anything to the discussion. If the argument is that people should think twice before posting stuff like that in the future, I would agree. But I would disagree that cuss words that are filtered into the word expletive need to go away altogether. We're all adults here and there is no mythical "kid who needs an example set for him". Reading "expletive" is extremely tame compared to what you can read on a million other websites, see on TV, hear in music, hear/use in everyday life. It's up to you what word you substitute for expletive in your head. Try puppies or something.

Come on. Nobody reads "[expletive] you, schumaker" and actually thinks anything other than the f-word. If they do, I'd be more worried about them. I agree the filter does it's job, but for me it's the tone. I don't even go in flashchat anymore and I'm in game threads a lot less than I used to be, mostly because of juvenile crap like telling players to f off and such. It's not even the cussing. I swear plenty. This is more like sitting next to a drunk at a ballpark who [expletive] and moans the whole time, and heckles players. It gets old. So I avoid it for the most part.

Of course nobody has to adjust to me or anyone else, but there's plenty of people who get piled on for their posting habits, be it smilies or punctuation or whatever else. I don't have a problem with someone bringing something that bugs them to the board's attention. And if the board as a whole agrees, then maybe people take the hint that it's annoying. If not then they don't. No harm done here.

I just personally think it's stupid to curse players rather than the situation, and I don't enjoy hearing or reading it. If I was to worry about anything with respect to kids, it's that kind of behavior vs. the swearing.

Websites that are really uptight with language are very annoying to me. This one isn't, but even VEB doesn't have a filter and tons of Cardinals fans go there everyday. Surely some kid is destined for a life of crime because he read the F-word there. But in all seriousness, what's annoying to some people isn't what's annoying to others. If I were to start this thread I'd have the opposite to say about it - if someone is contributing to the board they can drop bombs in every sentence for all I care.

But anyway, the point is to strike a balance so it's appealing to the majority - there's no right or wrong when it comes to what's posted on your website - and I think Michaels done a good job with that here.

Yeah, it's really not the swearing for me. I couldn't give two [expletive]. I agree about the balance being necessary, but that also means people ought to feel free/okay about pointing out that it's tilting too far one way or the other. This is a pretty loose board, much more so than it used to be, and I like it that way. There's also no question to me that there's more vitriol in game threads than there used to be. It also gets to be contagious, from what I've seen. Some game threads are fine though, and the more people the better. At one point early in the season it seemed to me it was 5 or 6 people taking turns bashing Rick Ankiel, which does nothing for me at all.
