I haven't seen 'Gummo', but I've seen 'Julien Donkey Boy'. The two gals I went to see it with walked out after about 20 minutes, but i stuck it out. That's a difficult one to watch, but I still found some things to appreciate about it. I notice that Korine co-wrote both 'Kids' and 'Ken Park' with Larry Clark.

A similar movie I watched last year was called "Frownland". But I really didn't care much for it aside from the snot scenes.

you guys have a higher pain tolerance than I do. whenever I get a whiff that a movie has blatantly graphic and deeply disturbing images - I run the other way. i realize what fits this category of "disturbing" is eye of beholder...but I decide quickly that I don't want to commit any of my time to find out whether the entertainment value outweighs the hassle of having gross scenes that i can't erase from my head for a few days... (in short -I'm a pansy.)

Ocassionally- I'll force myself to see a disturbing historical film like Schindler's List (disturbing was implied more than shown if I recall), or Hotel Rwanda (which gratefully wasn't overly graphic). but the upcoming "The Road" I have no desire to see (cannibalism).

Yes. Great movie. Isabelle Huppert was superb. Have you seen 'Cache' ('Hidden')? I think it's amazingly good. My favorite of Haneke's among the ones I've seen.

yes.. "cache" was fantastic too.. the
[SHOW]
open endings
are tough for me sometimes, but
Haneke does them so well.. especially in both of these movies..

Lots of testosterone to whet the latent homosexual appetites of straight guys, plenty of gratuitous violence to make watching shirtless hunks pummeling each other okay, with a ridiculous twist at the end to justify the insanity you've watched and trick you into thinking the '300'-ish nonsensical experience you just went through was actually "deep".

:D
Sounds like some kind of insecurity problem. I, for one, am comfortable with my latent homosexual appetites.

I was hoping one of our movie people would jump in to defend Fight Club, because I'm sure they could do a better job, but I'll give it a shot. I have no idea what it means for a movie to be "deep", but I thought Fight Club had some interesting themes and was not just gratuitous violence. Many (most?) people sometimes feel trapped in their lives and have fantasies about how they should be willing to reject ordinary comforts to have more extreme experiences that will give their life meaning. Fight Club takes this to an extreme and explores what happens ultimately leading to disaster. The "twist" isn't just some pointless gotcha but a plot device used to separate two sides of a character (the guy you are vs. the guy you think you should be).

I'd be interested if anybody has made something similar about war and fantasies about honor and great deeds. Maybe they already have, and I just hadn't heard about it.

You said it pretty well, I think.

Everything you say is true. I just didn't care for the movie.

I'm not sure exactly what you're looking for in regards to a similar movie on war, but Jarhead (warning: Sam Mendes) explores modern Marines--trained killers--struggling with boredom in modern warfare, when most of their old work is now done with air strikes and smart bombs. How are you supposed to acheive glory in battle when you can't find a battle in the middle of a war?

EDIT: FYI, Jarhead is alright. Not great. Probably Mendes' worst movie compared to ..Beauty, ..Perdition, and ..Road.

It might be difficult, but it's not impossible.
