You can't get fruit and vegetables year round without importing them.
Not fresh, but you can can/freeze them.

I think it would have more to do with people not being able to afford food, if it came to that (which I don't think it would, at least not to a critical extent). I do think we could see extreme unemployment rates.

No, but you can stock up w/ canned goods. We may not have every amenity everyone would like all the time......but we're not incapable of producing for ourselves.

I just re-read the article and he made it sound like the problem would be having money to buy the food....not necessarily the abundance of it.

They already are. Urbanites are getting pretty tuned into the "buy local" trend because it 1) reduces carbon footprint of food consumption and b) supports local/regional businesses. Here in Chicago, you can purchase a coop share in an organic farm that will promise a bushel full of fresh veggies (whatever is in season) every 2-3 weeks during the summer.

This country has absolutely incredible natural ag resources compared to other nations. If we stop converting farmland into tract housing, food production won't be an issue for the US.

It's not at all clear that this is true. I'd suggest that urbanites like local food, organic, etc. because they feel disconnected from the "authenticity" of nature. And they read too much Michael Pollan.

There is a new, well not so new, organization called the United States Green Building Council that has a LEED certification process. In order to qualify, your building/development has to basically have a certain number of credits, and credits are awarded for taking actions in the deisgn or construction process that benefit the environment/green movement. The first possible credit deals with site selection and it can't be USDA recognized farmland.

Not really earth shattering, or even that significant right now. But, there are others that certainly feel the way you do as is evidenced by that being in the process.

Whether or not it has anything to do with being organic, I do find that organic food tastes better than what you get in the store much of the time. Bananas and tomatoes in particular.
