Basically, the story is that the GOP said Pelosi killed the bill because her speech was "exceedingly partisan" and therefore, they voted against the bill.

What about Democrats that voted against it? They don't need Republicans at all.

That and no one in a Senate or House race is going to vote "yes" for a bill that most in their district oppose. They were right that Pelosi was partisan which was stupid on her part during this time, but whether or not they shifted their vote b/c of that rather than the intention of fixing their BS is another story.PujolJunkie wrote:Basically, the story is that the GOP said Pelosi killed the bill because her speech was "exceedingly partisan" and therefore, they voted against the bill.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/09/2 ... 30309.htmlHere's what McCain staff and surrogates were saying before the vote:
"This bill would not have been agreed to had it not been for John McCain... This is a bipartisan accomplishment, a bipartisan success. And if people want to get something done in Washington, they just watch John McCain. He's been the guy whose name is at the top of major pieces of legislation for a long time."
-- Mitt Romney, NBC's Today show, 9/29/08
"What Senator McCain was able to do was to help bring all of the parties to the table, including the House Republicans, whose votes were needed to pass this"
-- Steve Schmidt, NBC's Meet the Press, 9/28/08
"We're optimistic that Senator McCain will bring House Republicans on board without driving other parties away, resulting in a successful deal for the American taxpayer."
-- McCain spokeswoman Kimmie Lipscomb, 9/26/08

The blame for this doesn't fall on Pelosi, it blames on whoever is in charge of telling Americans why we need this bailout and assuring us that it will work. Bush has tried and failed, so it seems to be a part of his job description. Personally, I'm not sure we need to be assessing "blame" for the failure to quickly pass a bill that most Americans don't want or think will work.

McCain comes out of this looking horrible as does Pelosi.Jocephus wrote:http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/09/2 ... 30309.htmlHere's what McCain staff and surrogates were saying before the vote:
