Local and state governments aren't necessarily more efficient than the federal government. Kentucky politics are as in-bred as it gets.Popeye_Card wrote: As for local taxes funding local projects, that's a great idea in theory, but local governments are already as corrupt as they come. Imagine them getting even looser purse strings. Is Washington any better? Well, I don't think it's good by any means, but it's better than spreading the budget responsibility across thousands of smaller entities. If we can't trust the handful of representatives in Washington not to be greedy and/or foolish with the tax money they're given, how can we expect millions of people across the US? Accountability I guess? Again, great in theory, but it never fails that accountability and integrity fly out of the window when significant money is involved. I think that's human nature.

Seems that Palin is leading both sides to open their pocketbooks:

An Obama aide passes this news along:
$8 million raised since Palin's speech from over 130,000 donors - on pace to hit $10 million by the time John McCain hits the stage tonight.
The Palin pick energized Republicans...... and has given a jolt to Democrats, too. (The RNC has raised $1m since Palin's speech.)
"Sarah Palin's attacks have rallied our supporters in ways we never expected," says Obama campaign spokesman Bill Burton. "And we fully expect John McCain's attacks tonight to help us make our grassroots organization even stronger."

I can't believe someone named Pawlenty was being seriously considered for VP. That's a horrible name. It stumbles off the tongue. Is it PAW-lenty or Puhlenty? All the same. Vice President Pawlenty. President Pawlenty. I think not.

I am still truly undecided and an independent, but I have to say the posts in this thread from the Obama supporters are pushing me towards McCain. He's not perfect, ya know?
I will say now that I am "out" of the thread because of that, but reserve the right to dive back in...because I'm sure I will.

Wow. I spend the day flying and miss 50+ pages.
We're gonna hit Michael's 2500 post threshhold before McCain's speech is over at this rate.

Did anybody see that 9/11 video just shown at the RNC? Unbelievably [expletive] disgusting. Un.. [expletive].. believable. These people make me sick.

If I remember, GM had an electric car years ago but opted to bury it in the desert. I'm not bailing out a company because they make bad business decisions...that just makes them lazier.
I guess as a taxpayer, I'd look at:
1.) The size of the company and number employees
2.) The cost to bail them out
3.) The cost of having every employee on unemployment
4.) Choose the cheaper in the long run
I'm guessing the bailout happens more times than not. Doesn't mean I agree with it, but if it's cheaper on the taxpayer...I guess that's the right way to go.
BTW...this is totally hypothetical and I really don't know if it works this way...if anyone can educate me, please do.

As for taxing the rich more, I don't have a problem with it. If this country has been good to me, I should be good to the country. That is my civic duty and patriotism. IMHO.

"Barack Obama's campaign is built on losing Iraq"
Jesus Christ. I'm sorry. These people make me absolutely nauseous.
