I just want to know why one needs to do individual charitable work to have their belief that the government should help the poor be validated (from numerous pages back).JCShutout wrote:I used the words primary and secondary to try to point out some of our differences (or why we were bumping heads). In that case, all atheists that I know (like myself) "love god" because of a desire for true justice?JCShutout wrote:To love God is to love your neighbor. To love your neighbor (as yourself )is to want what is due to them (definition of justice). To love God is to do justice.
And a real joeybomb: Why doesn't god love himself? Since he shows such an asinine disregard for justice to people in the old testament simply to "test" the faith of certain people (see the story of Job).
I don't want anyone to really answer that question (because I know the religious answer to THAT fundamental flaw), just to get back on topic and off this 1 particular religion. Though this shows a point of what people in my position must deal with on a continual basis: the inter-mixing of the Christian religion in politics where it really doesn't belong.
So I'll help, is there a fiscally conservative yet socially liberal candidate out there?

The media is trying to make it seem like we have a suspense-filled evening ahead with this Palin speech.
I think it will be predictable. the crowd will love her speech and anything she says, that is for sure. USA chants galore. Pundits from Fox will like it. Pundits from MSNBC won't.
I'm gonna skip it.

Those who can do charitable work should, regardless of what the government can/cannot will/will not do. I think we can all agree on that. Carry on.....

This involves some of the differences I didn't want to get into because this isn't a theology thread. I think they mean a more case-by-case basis though.BenNX74205 wrote:I just want to know why one needs to do individual charitable work to have their belief that the government should help the poor be validated (from numerous pages back).JCShutout wrote:I used the words primary and secondary to try to point out some of our differences (or why we were bumping heads). Well, more stuff which is probably too theological for this thread, but do a wiki search on Rahner's anonymus Theist theory. The main idea is that God speaks to our heart, and by following that call, an atheist is in fact, following God's call. I'm more liberal than that (wiki, religion pluralism [not relativism]).TAZ wrote:In that case, all atheists that I know (like myself) "love god" because of a desire for true justice?JCShutout wrote:To love God is to love your neighbor. On the OT/NT thing, different views of interpretation. I view the texts as human written, with the people taking into account their relationship of God and their pre-scientific understanding of the world. You have to realize parts of the text are racist, sexist, anti-homosexual, and promote ethnic cleansing, and reject those parts. Its a messy process, but to reject a book outright, when parts of it are pretty progressive seems silly.
To disregard religion because of a poor past is silly. Early secular humanists were anti-semetic. Also, buried deep in those religions lie some of the best people who have ever lived. Both religious and secular alike saw native american indians as sub-human and open to slavery, but read up on Bartolome de las casas.
What Jesus said had political implications.

Has anyone (Be truthful) read every word of this thread?
