Huckabee genuinely cares for the less fortunate and that is a sign of weakness to the GOP base.
This is among the most ridiculous things I've seen written on this forum. Absolutely ridiculous. And as a card carrying member of the GOP base, I'm incredibly insulted, and it just proves how little you and apparently many other democrats know about republicans, the religious right, and conservatives in general.
I think you know what I meant, Strat.

Huckabee wanted to use the government to help fix the economic inequality of America. Conservatives/Republicans have repeatedly said that it is not the job of the government to take care of problems like these. I read a handful of Republicans on an another board that identified Huckabee as a "Christian Socialist."

Did I phrase that wrong and make it sound partisan? Probably, but that wasn't my intention. And I do know about Republicans and conservatives because I used to be one. And I know that Republicans were very much opposed to any sort of social welfare. They still are.

P
alin Pleased with Obama's Energy Plan
Includes Alaska's Natural Gas Reserves

No. 08-135

August 4, 2008, Fairbanks, Alaska - Governor Sarah Palin today responded to the energy plan put forward by the presumptive Democratic nominee for President, Illinois Senator Barack Obama.

“I am pleased to see Senator Obama acknowledge the huge potential Alaska’s natural gas reserves represent in terms of clean energy and sound jobs,” Governor Palin said. “The steps taken by the Alaska State Legislature this past week demonstrate that we are ready, willing and able to supply the energy our nation needs.”

In a speech given in Lansing, Michigan, Senator Obama called for the completion of the Alaska natural gas pipeline, stating, “Over the next five years, we should also lease more of the National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska for oil and gas production. And we should also tap more of our substantial natural gas reserves and work with the Canadian government to finally build the Alaska natural gas pipeline, delivering clean natural gas and creating good jobs in the process.”

Governor Palin also acknowledged the Senator’s proposal to offer $1,000 rebates to those struggling with the high cost of energy.

“We in Alaska feel that crunch and are taking steps to address it right here at home,” Governor Palin said. “This is a tool that must be on the table to buy us time until our long-term energy plans can be put into place. We have already enjoyed the support of Alaska Senator Ted Stevens, and it is gratifying to see Senator Obama get on board.”

The Governor did question the means to pay for Obama’s proposed rebate — a windfall profits tax on oil companies. In Alaska, the state’s resource valuation system, ACES, provides strong incentives for companies to re-invest their profits in new production.

“Windfall profits taxes alone prevent additional investment in domestic production. Without new supplies from American reserves, our dependency and addiction to foreign sources of oil will continue,” Governor Palin said.

Great, so the vice president nominees have endorsed the opposing presidential nominee.

gay rights really shouldnt be in question from the beginning though.

"all men are created equal"...seriously...does that mean anything?
What are the next words after that? Or are we ignoring the parts that point to how it's lined with Christianity?
There's nothing about Christianity in there. Even if there were, there's nothing that says to exclude certain people from the same rights everyone else has.
Right. It's not law.

If gays want the same rights as married people, then take away anything related to marriage away from government. Anything and everything.
Isn't this an "I'm taking my ball and going home" approach to national policy?
Um, how so?

Government has its hand in WAY too much. To me, marriage is a religious institution. Nowhere in my Bible does it suggest gays should marry.

If we want separation from church and state, and if we want less government (I know most of those on the board obviously don't), then isn't this a good place to start? But I could slash a lot of things.

I don't expect either of these candidates to cut government. But I'm going with the one most likely to do so.

I see your point, but marriage in our society has become really heavily tied into the law. We could take the term "marriage" out of it, and call everything "civil unions", thus keeping the legal protections while removing the religious context. I don't think we want to completely take away legal protections given to "married" couples.

for a lot of the Christians, Evangelicals I've known there has been a strong underlying link of contempt for non-evangelicals and minorities...

of course, if these people would just go to Church and believe then everything would be fine....

for a lot of the Republicans I've known their belief hasn't been in conservatism (state's rights, small government, low spending) but in moralism....

and again there has been a strong underlying link of contempt for others who don't share their views, and for the poor and minorities...apparently some Republicans must think that everyone in the country has the same chance to be rich, or even that everyone in the country can be rich (which obviously can't happen)...

I must qualify that by saying that I grew up in small towns, where government/judicial corruption and favoritism is everywhere and where most of the government is run by 'republicans'....

if Republicans truly did believe in small government and state's rights I'd be all for them, but when the recent Republican president does more to reverse small government and low spending than anyone in many years it's hard to get on board

Really, I blame the democrats for where our country is...the middle part of this country is up for the taking...most don't really know how to think for themselves, or don't have the time, hence why 75% of McCains ads have been attack ads...and the Republicans have been the best at taking advantage of this...good for them...

It is the "moralism" that bothers me most. I have personal opinions about these things, but imo they are not governments business. I can make statements about my political belief about abortion and have a very different personal view as one example.

as far as I can tell, any true-blue Republican should be an independent right now, and the Republican party needs to change it's name to the Moralistic party...
