Re: Obama/Biden vs. McCain/Palin: The Thread
My problem with the religious right has nothing to do with them helping people in need. I admire that. My problem with a portion of the religious far right has to do with pushing God into the science classroom, and emphasizing their own morality and beliefs into the legal system (gay rights).

This article doesn't specify where the money's going precisely, but either way the money is going there and I think that's good.Jocephus wrote:i believe his contributions to africa though, are for "christian/faith based" programs and pushing abstinence...but its really not that simple...ghostrunner wrote:I don't think it's fair to say Bush has been an enemy to the poor. Cutting rich people's taxes doesn't equate to that. Philosophically, conservatives believe too much help is a bad thing in some respects. I think that's true myself in some cases. That's not the same as not caring. Now there are some who don't care. But Bush did expand medicare coverage against the wishes of many Republicans. Even his critics will admit he's sent an unprecedented amount of money to Africa to help prevent the spread of AIDS. Tripled the amount previously being sent, as I recall.
I'm not going to say he's the working man's best buddy, but the Republicans don't care stuff is annoying.

Many people might believe that, but that doesn't make it true. Largely because I guarantee that you're opinion of what constitutes a compassionate party is not the same as my opinion of what constitutes a compassionate party.clement wrote:Nobody says that people working for charities, whether Christian, secular, or of some other religion, are uncompassionate. Many people do believe that the party that this "base" supports is uncompassionate.
And I think it's inaccurate to lump all charitable Christian organizations as members of the Christian right/evangelical Republican party base. Most Christians I know are very active in their churches, very charitable, and not Republicans by a long shot.
I also didn't say "all", at least I don't think I did. I said many, or thought that I said many. Regardless, I mean many christian organizations (and, really, I mean the people in these organizations, since most of these organizations are by nature non-political), and I certainly didn't say or imply anywhere that compassion was exclusive to republicans. Rather, that republicans have quite unfairly been labeled as uncompassionate.

Pro-life is pro life...all life...against capital punishment...against euthanasia...all life deserves to live. That's was the definition that I was raised with.ghostrunner wrote:Sure you can. ...what they should have said is anti-abortion and pro-capital punishment.Pro-life is a term representing a variety of perspectives and activist movements in bioethics. It can be used to indicate opposition to practices such as euthanasia, human cloning, research involving human embryonic stem cells, and the death penalty, but most commonly (especially in the media and popular discourse) to abortion, and support for fetal rights.

I thought it was people that were for gay rights that are pushing their views into the legal system.

Re: Obama/Biden vs. McCain/Palin: The Thread
and i fully admit, my "knowledge" is coming from a guest speaker i had in one of my undergraduate classes. he was a member of the peace corps who had come back to the states and was talking about AIDS in africa and just his experiences there. it ended up, through a Q&A, talking about policies and whatnot...and he said that Bush and Co. had/have it all wrong. again, they try and push abstinence to teh people (men) of africa...and im blanking on the exact location he was in, but it was a pretty *rough* area...and he was saying how abstinence does not work at all...he was saying how "the culture" over there is for men to have sex with as many woman as possible (granted thats kinda what it is here), but it really was a status thing for men over there...and simply saying "dont have sex" didn't do anything. he suggested/thought that handing out condoms and sex education (and all that jazz) was the best way to go....
ok, well...kinda off the topic of the thread, and i kinda lost my point..heh...oh well

Not when all people are created equal, and the government denies them those rights...on the basis that they are gay.BW23 wrote:I thought it was people that were for gay rights that are pushing their views into the legal system.
