Leroy is going to love this woman, Jaaaaa. I pretty much expect a character from Fargo to walk right into this interview from offset.

Huckabee genuinely cares for the less fortunate and that is a sign of weakness to the GOP base.
This is among the most ridiculous things I've seen written on this forum. Absolutely ridiculous. And as a card carrying member of the GOP base, I'm incredibly insulted, and it just proves how little you and apparently many other democrats know about republicans, the religious right, and conservatives in general.
Yeah.

Jack Kemp was always incredibly unpopular, to the point of being a VP nominee.

Conservatives, evangelicals, and the Christian right - the base of the Republican party - have done far more for the less fortunate in America and across the globe than anyone. Nearly every major aid and relief agency active in america right now is Christian and many of those are evangelical at their core.

Yet, somehow we get berated with this mantra that we don't care. It's insane. It's ignorant. And it bugs me like nothing else, as I and my wife direct a compassion ministry and work in disaster planning and response, and we see the thousands that care greatly about the less fortunate and the billions that are given every year by people who apparently think caring for the less fortunate is "a sign of weakness".
I just wanted to thank you for saying this and add my assent. I'm a pastor in the Rio Grande Valley, on the border of Mexico, a place that is full of poverty. Nearly all of the help that comes in (including after hurricane Dolly) has been from these "uncompassionate".

Can someone please expound on this a bit?
Palin holds a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Idaho where she also minored in politics. She married Todd Palin, who had been her boyfriend from high school onward, on August 29, 1988, and briefly worked as a sports reporter for local Anchorage television stations while also working as a commercial fisherman with her husband.
This is still his job as I understand it, along with working for BP.
Ah, commercial fisherman. That's no good.

Nobody says that people working for charities, whether Christian, secular, or of some other religion, are uncompassionate. Many people do believe that the party that this "base" supports is uncompassionate.

And I think it's inaccurate to lump all charitable Christian organizations as members of the Christian right/evangelical Republican party base. Most Christians I know are very active in their churches, very charitable, and not Republicans by a long shot.

I don't think it's fair to say Bush has been an enemy to the poor. Cutting rich people's taxes doesn't equate to that. Philosophically, conservatives believe too much help is a bad thing in some respects. I think that's true myself in some cases. That's not the same as not caring. Now there are some who don't care. But Bush did expand medicare coverage against the wishes of many Republicans. Even his critics will admit he's sent an unprecedented amount of money to Africa to help prevent the spread of AIDS. Tripled the amount previously being sent, as I recall.

I'm not going to say he's the working man's best buddy, but the Republicans don't care stuff is annoying.

I eat there maybe 1x per 3 years? I don't boycott it, if that's what you are getting at.

There are a ton of problems in the commercial fishing industry. It's the classic battle between jobs and protecting the resource which is providing the jobs. You don't have to rape the land to harvest food. But if maximum profits are your goal TODAY, then that's what is going to happen.

I really am very concerned about the environmental impact of a McCain/Palin ticket.

i believe his contributions to africa though, are for "christian/faith based" programs and pushing abstinence...but its really not that simple...

Sure you can. Babies deserve to live, people that take life don't. It's not my position, (pro-choice and anti-capital punishment) but I don't think it's inconsistent. You could turn around and say "why are you okay with "killing" unborn children, but not murderers?"
