She's simply introducing herself....I don't think the point of this speech is to say much anyway. It's all about face time, smiles and cheers......just like when Biden was announced.GatewaySnayke wrote:I just woke up groggy-eyed and came to pretty quick when I read Palin's name.
So far, I'm not very impressed with her. She's running for vice president of the United States -- not Caribou Palace, AK. This speech is about as un-vice presidential as it gets.

Her husband works for BP. Which is a little interesting.
And her kids names are: Track, Bristol, Piper, Willow, and Trig. Am I being snarky? You bet.

This isn't a debate, she's simply telling the country about who she is

Sure, but at least give people the IMPRESSION that you can be a leader. I mean, she's been governor of one of the smallest states in the country for a whole whopping 18 months, so there's not a lot in the way there, but I think that would have been a good surrogate speech.
The Obama campaign has responded and Nancy Pfotenhauer is already taking it out of context. Well done.

I liked the speech.
More importantly the Mccain campaign just picked up my vote. I had no idea they were using Van Halen's Right Now. I love that song.
Also, my name is Faron. Is there any snark about that?

As a pretty hardcore conservative, I really don't know what to think of this pick, and my first reaction was "Welp, looks like the cult meeting that occured last night in Denver is going to be a regular occurance for the next 4 years" but I've talked to some of my friends that know a crap ton more about politics then I do and they seem to think that she may put McCain over the edge..GatewaySnayke wrote:Sure, but at least give people the IMPRESSION that you can be a leader. So..who knows..but I wasn't that impressed with her speech either, that being said, I don't think you can really take an introduction as the be all end all of how she is going to be
I think people are so goo goo gah gah over how Obama speaks that they forget that public speaking isn't the most important thing in leading a nation..

Re: Obama/Biden vs. McCain/Palin: The Thread
I'm guessing they briefed her before the speech. In an interview just a month ago, she dissed the job, saying it didn’t seem “productive.”
In fact, she said she doesn’t know what the vice president does.
Larry Kudlow of CNBC’s “Kudlow & Co.” asked her about the possibility of becoming McCain ticket mate.
Palin replied: “[A]s for that V.P. talk all the time, I’ll tell you, I still can’t answer that question until somebody answers for me what is it exactly that the V.P. does every day? I’m used to being very productive and working real hard in an administration. We want to make sure that that V.P .slot would be a fruitful type of position, especially for Alaskans and for the things that we’re trying to accomplish up here for the rest of the U.S., before I can even start addressing that question.”

I know almost nothing about her so I don't have much of an opinion yet. But I agree with those who said that this choice effectively takes the primary argument McCain has been making against Obama right out of their hands. That rousing ovation that McCain received also takes out their second most consistent argument against Obama (his celebrity-status).
I think this pick does lend itself to some criticism of McCain's judgment because it doesn't make a lot of sense as a pick for the job of vice-president. Whether it's a good pick in terms of votes remains to be seen. When Mondale picked a relatively unknown woman for his running mate, a lot of people thought it would help him but it didn't help him at all.
