Kansas or Missouri ?

Frankly, I don't think that it's that big a rivalry in basketball, either.

When you freely admit that you really don't know much about it, this probably isn't the smartest thing to say.

It is a HUGE rivalry in basketball, and it always has been. Football was big this year, but every other year the basketball rivalry has meant much, much more to both schools. I imagine Kansas has a healthy lead in the all-time series, but I'm never surprised if Mizzou wins (even if they're a far inferior team).

To suggest that Kansas and Missouri aren't big basketball rivals is laughable.

I live 5 minutes from Missouri, and work with dozens of Missourians. I know what I hear. Maybe I'm on the wrong side of Missouri. I'm just telling you what the tone is in this area....if you want to laugh about it, feel free.

Not that many know about Missouri/Kansas. I didn't know it was a rivalry, which is why I made the original comment that earned me the "obtuse" label.

I'm sorry, but only a Missouri or Kansas fan would even THINK about comparing Missouri/Kansas to Michigan/Ohio State.

MU v. KU in basketball is one of the biggest rivalries in the sport. It's not UNC/Duke, but other than that, I can't think of any other that's as big. Every year, when ESPN has Rivalry Week, MU v. KU is one of the most hyped games they have. So while MU/KU in football isn't as big in football, OSU/Michigan isn't as big in basketball.

With all due respect, I don't know how you couldn't have known that MU and KU are rivals if you live in the Midwest. If someone on the coasts was unaware, I could understand that.

I didn't know that Missouri/Kansas was a rivalry. And I'm still not entirely certain why it is. I live in the Midwest, but I'm a LONG way from Kansas. In my neck of the woods (and I live 5 minutes from Missouri, and work with dozens of Missourians), the Missouri folks are far more concerned about beating Illinois than they are about beating Kansas. I don't know who voted in this poll, but they say that Illinois is a bigger rival for Missouri than Kansas is:

I wasn't aware that Missouri/Kansas was that much of a basketball rivalry, either. How often does Missouri beat Kansas in basketball? How often is it even a very close game (I'm not being sarcastic...... I honestly don't know). The Missouri/Illinois game in St. Louis is far more anticipated for the Missourians around here.

Mizzou/Illinois only plays big in the STL area because there are so many graduates from both schools in the area. I could be wrong but they've only been regularly playing every year in STL for ten years or so. KU-Mizzou is what matters everywhere else. It's been going for over 100 years and they play in the same division of the same conference. KU-Mizzou is arguably the second best rivalry in all of college basketball. Mizzou plays them tough every game and wins at least one of the matchups more years than not, usually in Columbia. Do they have a winning record against Kansas? No. But no one does. Mizzou plays them tougher on a regular basis than any other team in the Big XII. In the late nineties they won the home game against Kansas three straight years and KU was ranked no worse than third in the country all three games. They have at least six wins in the last twelve years that I can remember and Kansas was ranked in the top ten each time.

edit: Missouri and Illinois have been playing a bball game in STL for the last twenty four years. They've only been playing football for a few. Still not near the rivalry level of the border war. Braggin' Rights is a pretty appropriate name for it because that's all it's good for.

You made the point right there. You work with dozens from Missouri and Illinois. You are gonna talk MU-Illini Football and Basketball. That doesn't make it a rivalry. I live 10 minutes from Missouri and 20 minutes from Oklahoma. I have worked with guys from both states over the years. We trash it with the OU fans just the same , but they are not our rivalry. Missouri is.

But two dozen folks don't decide who the "Big" rivalry is. History does. Neighboring Teams in the same conference that over the years have been pretty competitive with each other. Teams that can beat each other no matter the year , no matter whether one team is way better than the other that year.

Look at the All Time records between the respective schools. Mizzou and Kansas have been in the same conference I would guess forever. Mizzou and Illinois never have that I know of. That's the reason. Nothing personal. I'd rather we would have had a rivalry with OU or Nebraska in football. That would have meant that we would have been pretty good over the years.

I know you have internet. Quite sure you have newspapers and radio , though I realize Illinois and Missouri are rather backwoods. Surely you have heard that KU - Mizzou is one of the All-time, longest running, biggest rivalries. You gotta be just messing with folks on here.

And yes Michigan - Ohio State has been a more nationally known rivalry. ( See we get the news here in Kansas) Doesn't make it anymore intense.
