How bad is my team?

I only get into Fantasy Football to b.s. with my friends. I don't know squat about football, and what little I do know wouldn't have mattered this year because I didn't login to my teams site in time to find out when the draft was. I missed the draft, and here is what the computer gave me:

QB - Losman (BUF) - I've never heard of this guy.
RB - Westbrook (PHI) - He's pretty good, right?
RB - Maroney (NE) - Huh? Who is he?
RB - Jacobs (NYG) - Don't know him either.
WR - Ward (PGH) - He's good I think.
WR - Chambers (MIA) - I've heard of him.
TE - Watson (NE) - No clue.
DEF - Eagles (PHI) - I've heard of the Eagles.
K - Akers (PHI) - I know he's good.

Bench:
Noorwood RB (ATL)
Betts RB (WAS)
Jones RB (DET)
Turner RB (SD)
Mason WR (BAL)
Curry WF (OAK)
Bennet RB (KC)

I don't think I know who any of those guys are.

So this is bad, right? I think my first order of business is getting a backup QB. I think I might have a RB or two to spare - that is if anyone wants them.

If your league has less than, say, 20 teams, your team is pretty awful.

Somehow you also have 8 running backs.

Westbrook's pretty good but not elite. Maroney plays for New England, so he gets bumped up a lot. Jacobs is supposed to start for the Giants, but who knows how much time he'll split.

You're hurting at QB and WR.

auto draft will pick a lot of RB's because they're always ranked higher. Very annoying.

Yeah, you're probably going to finish 11th or 12th with that team then.

My advice to you is to make your team as goofy as possible since you're going to lose anyway. Try trading for and grabbing guys off the waiver wire that have long confusing names, like T.J. Houshmandzadeh, Marques Tuiasosopo, Adimchinobe Echemandu, etc.

Last year I made the playoffs until our commish went and changed the rules, and reran the whole scoring system to take 2 wins away from me. There was a mutiny, I think everyone just forfeited their teams and I'm not even sure the season ended in an orderly manner.

It's that kind of league.

I agree with most the the QB and WR situations are pretty bad, but Westbrook, Maroney and Jacobs in a 12 team league is pretty fantastic. I assume you have a 3rd running back starting because its a "flex" position?

Ward is an... okay #2 wr.
Chambers is a solid #3 wr, which means he should not be starting for you unless he has a great matchup, or someone is injured.

Losman might be decent, but is a risk.

Your depth is the thing that is really bad. Norwood and Betts are decent RB backups in that each has a chance to be really good, but aren't sure things. Norwood will split carries with Dunn at first, but is talented enough to win the starting job by midseason. Betts is behind Clinton Portis, who is VERY injury prone. The problem is, you don't really need Jones, Turner or Bennett. Taking one of the latter two might be smart in a late round, hoping for an injured LT or LJ.

I don't want to even comment on your WR depth.

To try and compete, I would try to package Michael Turner along with something else to try and get a better WR than Chambers. Obviously this would only work if you were trading Turner to the guy who owns LT. Your RB trio could keep you in most games if you get better WRs or a better QB.

RB - Maroney (NE) - Huh? Who is he? starter for the Pats; one of the best realistic options for RB2 IMO
RB - Jacobs (NYG) - Don't know him either. Another great RB2 option IMO. Supergood for a flex
WR - Ward (PGH) - He's good I think. he's pretty good, but more suited to a WR2
WR - Chambers (MIA) - I've heard of him. not great, but has upside to be a potential WR2
TE - Watson (NE) - No clue. very athletic, good lower tier TE
DEF - Eagles (PHI) - I've heard of the Eagles. I have too. Good D
K - Akers (PHI) - I know he's good. yes he's good

Bench:
Noorwood RB (ATL) good depth
Betts RB (WAS) good depth
Jones RB (DET) meh
Turner RB (SD) good depth
Mason WR (BAL) good depth
Curry WF (OAK) good depth
Bennet RB (KC) meh, not bad if you have LJ

I would recommed trying to trade Betts to whoever has Portis, or Bennett to whoever has LJ and try and get their back up QB if said QB is someone like Jason Campbell, Alex Smith, Matt Schaub, Jay Cutler...

Also, I would consider trying to trade (Jacobs OR Maroney) + Chambers for a slight downgrade at RB and a bigger upgrade at WR. RB depth is the best asset to have on a fantasy team, and you really have it. Just try and turn it into players you can use.

In summary, I don't think it's as bad as you think, but you need to make some trades to turn the talent you can't start into equivalent talent you can
