Interview thread embarassing?

If I have to read "Juan sucks", "Miles shouldn't be starting" and "have we DFA'd Wells?" in baseball threads 100 times a day, I think the baseball talk section can handle some silliness. Then again, what do I know, most of my posts in the baseball section are ignored like the plaque anyway.

We're trying to find the right balence. Again, I think we pushed things a little too far and we're moving a little in other direction. We don't move as many threads however I HATE when a great baseball thread is hijacked by nonsense. I don't mind "joking" baseball threads but for awhile they were starting to take over BT and I didn't like the trend.

If you had deleted questions in that thread by people, but PM'ed them (so the thread wouldn't be hijacked) in a non-condescending manner and explained why they were deleted, I think people wouldn't be so p*ssy about it.

I think it's mostly that not all of us take or analyze baseball as seriously as others do. For a lot of us, it's just a fun escape and I think some of the problem may be that because we don't take it as seriously that we're not "as intelligent" about the game as some (imo).

From now on, I'll just steer clear of the threads that go too deep into statistical analysis and whatnot to avoid making silly posts and screwing it up for everyone.

I don't think it's a matter of how "intelligent" the posts are, I think it's more a matter of not wanting good baseball discussion to be hijacked by silly nonsense.

Baseball is, moreless, silly nonsense to me. That was the point I was trying to make. It's an escape and nothing more.

So instead of trying to lighten them up (which, I believe, was the only real intention of people who interrupt serious baseball discussion... not trying to 'press boundaries' as someone put it), I'll just avoid them.

I don't think that you need to do that, Elphie. We're not trying to make BT an exclusive club for stats only folks, and you, as with everyone on this board, have some great things to contribute to serious baseball threads.

But, there's a big difference between lightening up a thread and being an idiot to get some laughs.

I'm not talking about specific people or even specific posts. I don't have time to watch the board that closely, so don't anyone read anything into what I'm saying. Posters (all posters) just need to think about their posts a little before they make the post. A simple rule of thumb that I try to follow... if a post that you're about to make either detracts from the original topic or attacks a poster in a topic or on the board then it's probably not worth posting. If your post doesn't do either of those things, but is just there to lighten up the thread, then it's probably just fine.

Posters (all posters) just need to think about their posts a little before they make the post. A simple rule of thumb that I try to follow... if a post that you're about to make either detracts from the original topic or attacks a poster in a topic or on the board then it's probably not worth posting. If your post doesn't do either of those things, but is just there to lighten up the thread, then it's probably just fine.

Well, that's where moderation comes in. It's our job to help define the difference, draw the lines, and help people understand them so they can stay within them.

There will always be gray areas. We can't codify everything.

I also want people to know that if a post gets moved, deleted, warned, etc. it's not like being sent to the principle's office. It's just part of the process of keeping the forum going in the best and appropriate direction.

I don't think any of the mods have ever moved a thread because we hated it or hated the user (except RC). I usually try to follow it up with a PM to let people know why I did it, but sometimes you just forget to do it.

I will try and be a better drunker mod for us all.
