Keith Law's projections:
18. Cardinals Matt Wieters C/RHP Georgia Tech
I could just as easily flip Wieters with Harvey, as St. Louis' de facto scouting director, Jeff Luhnow, was there the day I saw Harvey at the end of April. Given the Rangers' lack of starting pitching prospects and the presence of Taylor Teagarden, it seems more likely that they'll take an arm, pushing Wieters down to St. Louis. The Cards do have a solid catching prospect in Bryan Anderson, but "we have too much catching" isn't a common complaint around baseball.
Cecil to the Cardinals at 36.

Thanks jdk. I don't get the BA stuff anymore.
He's really come on strong now that he's healthy. Louisville doesn't look forward to seeing him Monday afternoon since he has 3 HRs this weekend against them. Scouts have been seeing him a lot since his junior year of HS, so all teams should know him well. I bet he would have gone in rounds 3-5 prior to the injury.

Ill take the righty with a 100 MPH and a knock out breaking pitch over a lefty with a mid 90s fastball and breaking pitches that are all projection and well below average presently.fewgoodcards wrote:if i was trying to convince someone that brackman was a good prospect, i wouldn't be comparing him to jeff samardzija. samardzija has been abysmal in the minor leagues. he gives up a ton of hits and even with his high 90's fastball, he can't strike anyone out. sure he is still young and has a lot of experience to gain, but that is one heck of a bet at $10 million. if it was up to me, if i am going to take a raw arm with plus stuff give me the high school kid that has 3 more years to develop. tell me what you would rather have, a 21 year old andrew brackman who throws 99 from the right side or a 17 year old madison bumgarner who throws 97 from the leftside? i'm taking bumgarner every time based on talent, and he is going to cost a lot less money. not to mention that brackman is already showing elbow problems and a huge risk to begin with becomes even bigger..The thing about Brackman is he's so raw because he's been doubling as a power-forward much of his life. He's a lot like Jeff Samardzija in that respect.

This is what Mayo thinks. I reallyhope he's wrong.
18. St. Louis Cardinals: Jake Arrieta, RHP, Texas Christian University
There was a temptation to put a Boras guy here because the Cardinals can do that, but it didn't make sense to force the issue, especially with Andrew Brackman missing regional play with some elbow trouble. Instead, I'll go with a "safe" pick in Arrieta. He's had an up-and-down season, but he turned in a dandy at UNLV in conference tournament play and pitched well in Regional action in the scouts' last look at him. The Cardinals have enjoyed the Lone Star State in recent drafts and even took a Horned Frog pitcher last year, Brad Furnish.
Last projection: Arrieta

Since Luhnow said we are going for a "home run" at 18, I don't think we have to worry about that one.Izzyman wrote:This is what Mayo thinks. I reallyhope he's wrong.

Arrieta at 36 might not be too bad though.
