Can glass "just break" for no reason??!?!?

I agree. Look for rocks. Screens have a lot of give. A lawn mower didn't throw a rock up or anything did it?

I was sitting in my friend's living room last summer and he saw one of his wife's old earrings (some sort of cheap stud I guess) laying on the carpet by the couch where we were sitting. They have a young kid so he picked it up and tried to throw into the trash can by their sliding glass door in the kitchen. He missed and hit the door, pretty much in that exact same spot that Zag highlighted and the entire thing spider-webbed just like in your picture.

I think small chips of porcelain can do the same thing, so who knows what actually hit your door. But it wouldn't have to be something large.

glass doesn't break for no reason.

glass does sometimes break under the strain of it own depression.

did the glass seem at all unhappy in the weeks leading up to the break?

reluctant to slide or making a sighing noise when you opened or closed the door?

anything like that?

it's also possible a bird flew into the screen-glass combo and the screen just stretched a little but the glass didn't. was their a dead bird in the area with the imprint of a screen on it's face?

I once was drunk at Taco Bell many years ago and I saw some friends coming in from outside through the large arched window next to our booth. So I put my face up against the glass and made some sort of face at them. My friend lightly punched at my face on the glass from outside and the whole window shattered all over me. I was picking glass out of my hair, my clothes. But luckily I only had a few minor cuts on my hand and a small one on my forehead.
