Would you rather a championship followed by years of poor ball, or perennial contention?

Give me the series, it's all about winning, baby

As a Cub fan, both of them seem like a utopian dream.

So, are you suggesting that we can never know which really matters more? Right now, they're sort of equidistant, kind've best perspective to know the relative costs and benefits. From here, we're moving towards or away from one or the other, and I think I read you to be suggesting that once you move away from the midpoint, there will always be bias and we can never know how we really feel.
i have no idea what you just said.. it's a baseball game, and it happens
to be my favorite baseball team that we're talking about... when they win a game, i'm happy, and when
they win the world series i'm really happy.. it's not rocket science with formulas and theories.

We've had several years of being competitive, and won the series once. You can kinda have it both ways, you don't have to be the Marlins.
Well said, Leroy.

Option A is the Marlins. Option B is the Braves (yes, I know they won in '95). There should be an Option C (annually competitive with an occasional win). And that's the Cards.

I don't see the correlation between the Cards '06 championship and early '07 struggles. I believe the team as currently structured has more to do with fiscal decisions made to not invest in a poor offseason market than ownership mailing it in because we won last year.

I enjoyed the WSC and saw it as a culmination of a multi-year quest rather than an 83-win team getting lucky. And I expect ownership to do what it needs to in order to keep the team competitive. The thing that would disappoint me is if it becomes clear that they have no intentions of doing that.

SteveO, give me the Series every time. I waited 24 years for it and I will gladly take a couple of bad seasons as a result. Somebody once said that after your team wins it all theres a 5 year grace period. You cant complain about anything related to the Cards during those 5 years.

I would love to see the Cards competitive year in and out but I wanted that World Championship more that anything... =D>

My favorite seasons are when they go on strikes or have earthquakes.

I don't see much difference between the Braves and Cardinals. Not enough to create a option C.

For who? Players, definitely. Fans, not so sure.

30 years ago they were one in the same. You won the pennant and went to the World Series. The current playoff format creates this scenario in my opinion.
I think Bill James also helped create this scenario.

Having soaked in the national perception of the Cardinals and having heard "Your World Champion Cardinals... On KTRS!", I've changed my mind on this. As BW says, the point of the exercise is winning the title. That we now have a better (statistical) grasp of the variables at play in the postseason doesn't change that ultimate goal.

For me, that's who. I thought that's what the question was asking.
