In the 9th, with two on and one out and just a flickering hope of some kind of rally, wilson and rolen strike out on, I believe, 6 pitches.

I'm about as worried as Rolen as I am Pujols -- both of them will snap out of it.

Edmonds, well.. I don't share the optimism with his. Natural decline due to age, lingering physical injuries, the recurring concussion problems... there's a lot out there to be scared of with him.

Ok, declining skills, injuries, etc.... but this?

My hope with Edmonds is his struggles are due to a lack of spring training.

Rolen gets a free pass because of Pujols's struggles, but Rolen has two extra-base hits all season. That's hard to believe.

Through the first two months of 2004, Edmonds struggled mightily. This is when he claimed to have been thinking of just hanging it up. His average was below .260. He had 11 HRs (much higher than the pace he looks to be on now) and around 30 RBIs.

His OPS in the final four months was probably close to 300 points higher in than it was in the first two months.

While it was his left shoulder, he did have surgery that offseason. It's going to take time this season to get going again.

The one thing I worry about is the PCS.

No, I totally acknowledge that he's going to get a lot better.

I'm just saying that Rolen and Pujols are going to get back to their career averages, whereas I expect a significant dropoff in that department from Edmonds; there was a substantial loss of production last year out of him, and even if you throw his tough start to the season out of it, its hard for me to find any encouragement in his situation (age, foot injury, head injury).

Ultimately, I'm not confident that he's going to revert back to a #5 hitter at this stage in his career.

Edit:

The average #5 hitter in Major League Baseball had a line of .280 / .351 / .477 (.828). I thought the numbers would be a bit more beefy than that.

I guess I'm possibly being a bit harsh on him.

That said, I am still not optimistic. You could say that Edmonds is a guy that is constantly playing with nagging injuries, but the post-concussion syndrome is unique and scary.
