Is that a silver lining? Hawksworth has made 13 Double-A starts -- with decent but not spectacular results -- and no Triple-A starts. I don't think it's a good idea to bring him up unless it's for one emergency start.RC21 wrote:The silver lining is the one that a few people have pointed out. Carpenter sent home (per Bernie per Strauss)

I'm tired of seeing him on the mound where you can clearly tell every other word out of his mouth is "f*$&" and he's beating himself up all the time. I guess with Kline it was cute that he screamed obscenities at himself because he was still effective, but seeing it out of Thompson's baby-face after surrendering a homer then a double then a walk etc. makes it less cute. I can't figure him out sometimes.

Agreed on your general premise.jagtrader wrote:Is that a silver lining? Hawksworth has made 13 Double-A starts -- with decent but not spectacular results -- and no Triple-A starts. To clarify what I meant.... Hawksworth has something of an exciting arm and I want to see more of it. That'll be possible now. That's the silver lining for me.
I don't have very high expectations for him, at least not in this go-round. Think Haren circa 2003- sub-mediocrity with flashes of what could come to pass someday.

I am going to go out on a limb here and say this isn't as bad as it could be. I think when the season is nearing an end we will have one of, if not the best, pitching rotations in the NL and possibly the entire league. I say this because I have watched Wells, AW, Reyes, and Looper pitch and all were very good starts. Wells got into trouble a time or two but then he got out of it. AW and Reyes will continue to get better as the season progresses, and though they may not be their best this season, they will be better than most. Sure they'll go out and blow a few starts this year, but that can happen to anyone, including Carp or the mighty Santana.
Looper strikes me as the type of pitcher that can do well as long as he listens to Papa Dave. What I mean by that is he doesn't have great stuff, but he gets the job done, much the same way Suppan did a couple years ago (maybe Izzy would be a better comparison, but you get my drift). I see AW and Reyes becoming above average pitchers, Looper being average, and Mulder coming back and having a great second half to earn his way back into the club's good graces.
My point is that if this happened last year we would have been hosed. I think the overall rotation is stronger now than last year. Some of you will find statistics to argue otherwise, but baseball is more than statistics; it involves the unseen and goes off of hunches and I have a hunch that our rotation will be just fine with or without Carp. I wish the best for Carp and I hope to see him back soon, but if he misses part or all of the season (worst case scenario) I think we have a better chance of recouping now than later on in the season and we can still pull off a division title. Everything after that is gravy.

I'd rather give Keisler these starts and let Hawksworth pitch in Triple-A, where he belongs. Calling up Hawk can lead to two negative results: he could get clobbered or he could get hurt. He's not ready for the big leagues.RC21 wrote:Agreed on your general premise.jagtrader wrote:Is that a silver lining? In fairness, they have said that it may be a bullpen start.jagtrader wrote:I'd rather give Keisler these starts and let Hawksworth pitch in Triple-A, where he belongs. Calling up Hawk can lead to two negative results: he could get clobbered or he could get hurt. He's not ready for the big leagues.
And after the Ankiel ordeal, I'm 100% certain that TLR will be extremely cognisant of whatever may happen to Hawksworth's psyche.

Kiesler or Narveson would do, in my book. I'd like to see what we have in Narvy, if for no other reason so the org can make a decision on this guy. It's not an issue now, but I'd rather not see him taking up space at AAA with guys like Garcia, Ottavino, Cate, etc. on the rise. I think this needs to happen in 2007.

I like the idea of an emergency start, even if it's a bit manufactured. Pittsburgh isn't a good hitting team and the weather should be conducive to pitching. Try to take the pressure off him by making it abundantly clear in advance that he's headed back to Memphis no matter what.jagtrader wrote:Is that a silver lining?
