Wells and Hernandez

I took a look at some splits for Wells and Hernandez to see how they fared, and the results were somewhat surprising. First off, Hernandez hasn't faced any of the NL only Cardinals, ever. He didn't pitch in the series late in last season, and then was injured for the playoffs, so Pujols, Duncan, Rolen, Molina, Schumaker, and Taguchi all have not seen him.

However, out of the players who have, the Cards are batting at a .327 clip in 52 at bats spread over five players. Eckstein and Kennedy both hit him really well, with Eck 5 for 11 (.455) and Kennedy 6 for 17 (.353). Not surprisingly, Preston Wilson is the low man, just 2 for 9 (.222) with a home run and only one strikeout. Spiezio is all or nothing against him, going 3 for 12, with two home runs, three strikeouts, and six walks. Jimmy Baseball had a game against him a long time ago, where he went 1 for 3 with a strikeout.

On the other side, Wells gets hit at a .292 clip by the Mets, with the usual suspects leading. Reyes (4 for 6), Beltran (5 for 11), and Chavez (6 for 13) all beat on him pretty regularly, but Wright (0 for 2), Delgado (2 for 17) and Lo Duca (1 for 8) are pretty terrible. If Kip can stay away from the big bats that hurt him in the middle of the order, it'll be interesting to see if the Mets can put enough together to really hurt him.

I'm looking forward to seeing what the new, blodclot-free Wells can do against a very good lineup. This will be quite a test for the Kipper.

He will go 3IP, 8 H, 6 ER, 3 HR, and the radiowaves will be filled tommorrow with talk of, "THIS is what we have for our #2 starter?!?"

Meanwhile, Duncan will go 2 for 3 with a HR and a walk, and a nice play in the field to go along with it. There will be further talk as to why the heck LaRussa started Taguchi over Duncan in the opener.

Fast forward 3 months. Kip Wells is in the top 5 in the NL in ERA, Duncan is playing terribly in the OF while putting up decent numbers at the plate. Taguchi will hit a game-winning HR and all will be forgiven.
